The history of Jaffna goes back a very long time. Long ago, people lived there during the Iron Age. They left behind old pots and seals that show how they lived. In the 13th century, a powerful group called the Kingdom of Aryacakravarti began. This kingdom was a regional power in Sri Lanka. Its capital was a suburb called Nallur. This area was a center for beautiful Tamil and Sanskrit writing.
Over the years, many different rulers controlled the city. The Portuguese took control in 1619. Later, the Dutch took the city from them in 1658. The Dutch rebuilt the Jaffna Fort and helped the city grow. After the Dutch, the British took over in 1796. During the British period, the city became very wealthy. They built big roads and a railway line to connect Jaffna to other places like Colombo and Kandy.

The city sits on the Jaffna peninsula, which is a piece of land surrounded by water. In 2012, the city had a population of 88,138 people. This makes it the 12th most populous city in Sri Lanka. Before the Sri Lankan Civil War, it was the second largest city in the country, following Colombo.
The name Jaffna likely comes from the Tamil word Yazhpanam. This name is linked to a legend about a musician named Panan. He played a musical instrument called a Yal for a king. The king was so happy that he gave the musician a sandy plain. The suffix -pattinam in older names suggests the city was a seaport town. This is supported by historical harbors like the Columbuthurai Commercial Harbor. The name changed to Jaffna when non-Tamil speakers adopted it. They often dropped the Tamil ending 'm' from the name.
Archaeological evidence shows that people lived in this region during the Iron Age. Excavations at Kandarodai have found ancient pottery and seals. These include the bronze Anaikoddai seal with Tamil-Brahmi and Indus script. Researchers found various types of ancient ceramics in the area. These include black and red ware, grey ware, and Ming Porcelains. These items suggest that Jaffna was part of a large maritime trade network. This network connected the peninsula to South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Far East.
During the medieval period, the Kingdom of Aryacakravarti emerged in the 13th century. This kingdom was an ally to the Pandyan Empire in South India. As the Pandyan Empire weakened, the Aryacakravarti rulers became independent. The suburb of Nallur served as the capital for this medieval Tamil Jaffna Kingdom. The kingdom was a significant regional power during the 13th and 14th centuries. However, it faced conflicts with the Vijayanagar Empire and the Kotte Kingdom. This led to periods where the kingdom lost its total independence.
European powers changed the city during the colonial era. The Portuguese captured the area in 1619. They moved the political center from Nallur to a new area called Jaffnapatao. The Portuguese controlled the lucrative elephant trade and imported goods from India. In 1658, the Dutch East India Company took the city after a three-month siege. The Dutch were more tolerant of local religion and trade than the Portuguese. They rebuilt many Hindu temples and expanded the Jaffna Fort.
The British took control of the city in 1796. Under British rule, Jaffna experienced rapid growth and prosperity. Missionaries built many schools that helped residents achieve high literacy rates. The British also built major roads and a railway line. This connected Jaffna to Colombo and Kandy. This infrastructure helped the city become a major commercial hub. The wealth of the citizens allowed them to build important libraries and museums.
In more recent history, Jaffna became a center for Tamil nationalism. This led to a long and difficult civil war. The city saw heavy damage from air and land bombardments. During the conflict, the famous Jaffna library was burnt down in 1981. Different groups occupied the city at different times. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held the city for several years. The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) also occupied the city briefly in 1987. The civil war finally ended in 2009.
Today, Jaffna is a city of reconstruction and return. Since the war ended, refugees and displaced people have begun returning home. The government and private sectors are working to rebuild the city. Jaffna remains home to many different ethnic groups, including Sri Lankan Tamils and Moors. Most Tamils in the city are Hindus, followed by Christians and Muslims. The city continues to host many educational, commercial, and government institutions.
