It then became part of the Austrian Empire and later Austria-Hungary. After World War I, the city briefly served as the temporary capital of the West Ukrainian People's Republic from January to May 1919.

On the rural-urban fringe, there are Soviet prefabricated apartment blocks. The city was once divided into several districts. These included the Tysmenytsia and Halych districts. Later, it was split into six smaller districts. These included a midtown area for the wealthy Catholic population and suburbs like Zabolotiv and Lysets where the plebeians lived.
Ivano-Frankivsk is surrounded by several other important locations. The closest neighboring city is Tysmenytsia, which is less than 10 km to the east. Other nearby cities within a 50 km radius include Tlumach to the east, Nadvirna to the south, Kalush to the west, and Halych to the north. The city also administers five adjacent villages. These are Mykytyntsi, Krykhivtsi, Vovchynets, Uhornyky, and Khryplyn. In recent years, the city has faced modern challenges. Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the city has been targeted by missiles. For example, Russian missiles struck the city on 24 February and 11 March 2022.
