He observed this by exposing subjects to electric shocks. His research showed that while all temperaments respond to stress, they do so at different speeds. The "quick-to-shut-down" individuals possessed a fundamentally different type of nervous system. This work provided deep insight into how biological systems protect themselves from extreme stimuli.
