During World War II, Kozhedub mastered several advanced fighter aircraft. He primarily flew Lavochkin models, specifically the La-5 and the La-7. 
Kozhedub’s combat record is filled with significant milestones. He began his tally on July 6, 1943, by shooting down a Ju 87. By October 1943, he had achieved 20 aerial victories and flown 146 sorties. This led to his first nomination as a Hero of the Soviet Union. In February 1945, he achieved a rare feat during a mission near Frankfurt. While flying with his wingman, Dmitry Titarenko, Kozhedub shot down an Me 262 jet. This made him the first Soviet pilot to destroy a jet fighter.
His bravery earned him the highest honors available in the Soviet Union. He was named a Hero of the Soviet Union on three separate occasions. These awards were given on February 4, 1944, August 19, 1944, and August 18, 1945. He also received the Order of Lenin twice. His many medals included seven Orders of the Red Banner. By the end of the war, he had completed 330 sorties and 120 dogfights. He successfully shot down 64 enemy aircraft in total.
After the war, Kozhedub transitioned into leadership and command roles. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in Monino in 1949. In November 1950, he took command of the 324th Fighter Aviation Division. This unit was sent to China during the Korean War to train pilots. Although he mastered the MiG-15 jet, orders prevented him from flying combat missions there. His division was highly successful, claiming 216 victories while losing only 27 MiG-15 aircraft. This period showed his ability to lead large groups of pilots.
Kozhedub’s later years were defined by high-level military and political service. He served as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 1946 to 1962. He also chaired the Federation of Aviation Sports from 1967 to 1987. Throughout his career, he flew many different aircraft, including the Yak-3, MiG-21, and various helicopters. He was promoted to Marshal of Aviation in 1985. He lived in Moscow until his death from a heart attack in 1991.
