Many different empires controlled the region over many centuries. The Achaemenid Empire conquered Babylon in 539 BCE. Cyrus the Great took titles like King of Babylon. Later, Alexander the Great led a campaign in 331 BCE. He intended to make Babylon his imperial capital. After his death, the Seleucid Empire took control. They established Seleucia as the new capital. Economic power remained in Mesopotamia. The silver shekel was used as currency. Later, the Parthian and Sasanian empires ruled the area. The Sasanian capital was Ctesiphon. This city eventually merged with Seleucia. It became a large, cosmopolitan metropolis.

In the 7th century, the Arab conquest changed the region. Iraq became the center of the Abbasid Caliphate. Baghdad was founded in 762. This city became a global hub for culture and intellect. This period is called the Islamic Golden Age. Iraq generated massive state revenues during this time. This income was four times higher than Egypt. Egypt was the second richest province. The Abbasid rulers restored many canal systems. They also cultivated much more land. Baghdad housed famous institutions like the House of Wisdom.

The modern political history of Iraq is complex. The Ottoman Empire governed the region for centuries. It was known as Ottoman Iraq. After World War I, the Ottoman Empire was defeated. Iraq became independent in 1932. It first emerged as a Hashemite monarchy. This happened after a period of British administration. In 1958, a military coup changed the government. Abdul Karim Qasim led the coup to establish a republic. Later, the Ba'ath Party took power in 1968. This created a one-party state. Leaders included Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr and Saddam Hussein.

Iraq has faced several periods of significant conflict. Saddam Hussein led wars against Iran from 1980 to 1988. He also invaded Kuwait in 1990. In 2003, a U.S.-led coalition invaded the country. This invasion overthrew the government. It triggered an insurgency and sectarian violence. This period is known as the Iraq War. It ended in 2011. From 2013 to 2017, the Islamic State rose to power. This caused another major conflict.
