Ip Man was quickly and easily defeated in two separate matches. This defeat was deeply discouraging and caused him great embarrassment. However, Leung Bik praised Ip's techniques and offered to train him. Ip Man practiced with Leung Bik until the latter died in 1911.

Ip Man's adult life involved several different roles and locations. He returned to Foshan in 1916 at the age of 24. During this time, he served as a police officer for the Nationalist government. He taught Wing Chun to friends, relatives, and his subordinates. He did not run an official school during this Foshan period. Some of his notable students included Lok Yiu and Chow Kwong-yue. Chow was considered very talented but chose to focus on trade instead. Other students, like Kwok Fu and Lun Kah, helped spread the art in the Guangdong region.

Major historical conflicts forced Ip Man to change his life again. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he sided with the Kuomintang. There are rumors he worked as an undercover intelligence officer in Guizhou. After the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949, Ip Man moved to Hong Kong. He traveled through Macau with his wife, Cheung Wing-sing, and their daughter. Because borders closed in 1951, he was permanently separated from his wife. Ip Man struggled with unemployment in Hong Kong for many years. He worked in a restaurant to support his family in Foshan.

To escape poverty, Ip Man began teaching Wing Chun in the early 1950s. His first students were often members of the Restaurant Workers' Association. These were frequently uneducated or restless young men living in dangerous environments. He moved his school twice, moving from Sham Shui Po to Yau Ma Tei. As his reputation grew, he attracted wealthier and more educated students. In 1967, he and several students formed the Ving Tsun Athletic Association. This organization helped him manage his teaching and his financial difficulties. His fame grew as his students won matches against other martial artists.

Ip Man passed away from laryngeal cancer on December 2, 1972. He died in his home on Tung Choi Street in Hong Kong. His death occurred only seven months before the death of Bruce Lee. He left behind a massive legacy through his many disciples. These include students such as Wong Shun-leung, Moy Yat, and his sons Ip Chun and Ip Ching. In 2000, he was inducted into the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame. Today, his life is celebrated through many films and the Ip Man Museum in Foshan.
