Inverness is a major city located in the Scottish Highlands.

Archaeological evidence shows that humans have inhabited this area for thousands of years. Some findings suggest people lived here during the Late Mesolithic period around 6500 BC.
Throughout history, Inverness has been a site of significant political and military importance. The city was once a primary stronghold for the Picts. In AD 569, St Columba visited the area to meet the Pictish king Brude. The city's strategic location has led to many historical conflicts. In the 11th century, a battle occurred at Blàr nam Fèinne against Norway. Later, in 1746, the Battle of Culloden took place on the nearby Culloden Moor.
Medieval Inverness saw the rise of important leaders and structures. The Gaelic king Mac Bethad Mac Findláich, known as MacBeth, ruled from a castle within the city. He served as the Mormaer of Moray and Ross. King David I, or Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim, granted the first royal charter around 1160. Later, William the Lion granted several charters, including one that created the city as a royal burgh. The city also experienced raids from the Hebrides, specifically by the MacDonald Lords of the Isles. In 1562, Mary, Queen of Scots, visited the area during a political insurrection. She stayed in a house on Bridge Street that stood until the 1970s.
Industrial and technological changes transformed the city during the 19th and 20th centuries. The arrival of the railway in 1855 connected Inverness to the rest of the United Kingdom.

In the modern era, Inverness has become a rapidly growing urban centre. The population grew from 40,969 in 2001 to 46,969 in 2012.
