During these twenty years, the world saw many social and political shifts. It was a time when old ways of living began to fade. New technologies and new ideas changed how people lived every day. This period helped shape the modern world we know today.

Many large empires fell apart after the first World War. The Russian, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and German Empires were all dismantled.

This created many new nations in Europe. Countries like Poland and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes were formed. Smaller nations like Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania also became independent. In the Near East, Egypt and Iraq gained their independence too. These changes meant that borders across the globe were being redrawn.

In the 1920s, many people experienced a time of wealth called the Roaring Twenties.

New machines like automobiles and radios became common. Electric lighting and new appliances changed how homes worked. This was also a time of social change for women. In the United States, women gained the right to vote in 1920. In Britain, they gained this right in 1918. Many women, called flappers, wore new styles like knee-length dresses.

This era of prosperity ended with the Great Depression. It began in 1929 after a stock market crash in the United States.

This was a very deep economic downturn for the whole world. Many people lost their jobs and their income. In the United States, unemployment rose to 25 percent. In some other countries, it rose as high as 33 percent. International trade also fell by more than half.

As the economy struggled, new political leaders rose to power. Fascism grew in countries like Italy and Germany.

These leaders had big plans to expand their lands. At the same time, military technology was advancing very quickly. People debated how to use new planes and tanks. The period finally ended when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. This event started the Second World War.

This period lasted for 20 years, 9 months, and 21 days. It was a time of intense global change. Social, political, and economic systems shifted across the world. These changes helped form the foundations of modern warfare and international relations.

Following World War I, the global political map changed significantly. Four major empires were dismantled: the Russian, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and German Empires.

In Europe, this collapse led to the creation of several new or restored nations. Poland and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes emerged as larger countries. Smaller independent nations also formed, such as Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. In the Near East, Egypt and Iraq gained independence. The Bolsheviks regained control of several regions in Russia to form the Soviet Union.

The 1920s were characterized by a period of prosperity known as the Roaring Twenties. This era saw significant social and cultural trends, especially in cities like New York, Paris, and London.

Petroleum-based energy production led to increased mechanization. Automobiles, electric lighting, radios, and telephones became common in many households. This economic growth allowed for new lifestyles and the rise of celebrity culture. Women also experienced major social shifts. Many countries enacted women's suffrage, including Britain in 1918 and the United States in 1920. In urban areas, young women known as "flappers" adopted new fashions like bobbed hair and knee-length dresses.

This era of economic success ended abruptly with the Great Depression. This worldwide economic downturn began after the United States stock market crashed on 29 October 1929, known as Black Tuesday.

Between 1929 and 1932, the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) fell by an estimated 15%. International trade plunged by more than 50%. Unemployment rates rose sharply, reaching 25% in the United States and as high as 33% in some other nations. Rural areas suffered as crop prices fell by about 60%. This instability caused many democratic regimes to collapse.

As economic conditions worsened, new and aggressive political movements emerged. In Russia, the October Revolution had already established the rise of communism. In Italy, Benito Mussolini and the National Fascist Party came to power after the 1922 March on Rome.

In Germany, fascism also rose to prominence. These regimes often pursued territorial ambitions. Japan occupied large amounts of Chinese land, leading to clashes on the Manchurian border.

Italy also invaded and occupied Abyssinia, which is now Ethiopia. These aggressive moves challenged the stability of international relations.

Diplomacy during this time focused on resolving wartime issues and preventing future conflict. The League of Nations was established to maintain peace, but it faced many challenges. Nations attempted disarmament through various conferences. For example, the Washington Naval Conference of 1921 helped set limits on capital ships. Britain also led the 1927 Geneva Naval Conference and the 1930 London Conference. However, the refusal of countries like Japan, Germany, Italy, and the USSR to participate eventually caused naval disarmament efforts to collapse. By 1936, the focus shifted from disarmament back to rearmament.

Military technology advanced rapidly during these two decades. Engineers and leaders debated the best ways to use new inventions. On land, they discussed how to use armored and motorized forces alongside traditional infantry and artillery. In the air, experts debated whether to use planes for strategic bombing or for close air support on the front lines. In the navy, there was a debate over whether battleships would remain dominant or if naval aviation would make them obsolete. These debates were eventually resolved through the practical experience of World War II. The period saw a shift from traditional line-based warfare toward more mobile and mechanized combat.
