Crossing this line changes your date in a big way. If you travel west across the line, you must add one day to your calendar. If you travel east, you must take one day away. This can be confusing for people moving around the globe. Travelers must also change their clocks by one hour for every 15 degrees they move. For example, moving west means you set your clock forward one hour every 15 degrees. When you finally hit the date line, you jump forward 24 hours. This keeps the world's time in a steady order.

People learned about this strange rule through long journeys at sea. In the 14th century, an Arab geographer named Abulfeda predicted this would happen. He thought sailors would lose a day if they went around the world. This was proven true in 1522 during the Magellan-Elcano expedition. This was the first group to successfully sail all the way around the Earth. After three years of sailing west, the crew arrived at Cape Verde. They thought it was Wednesday, but the locals said it was actually Thursday. They had kept perfect records, but the date was still different.

Crossing the IDL requires specific changes to your time and date. If you travel westbound, you increase your date by one day. If you travel eastbound, you decrease your date by one day. This process is linked to how we track time across longitudes. Travelers must also adjust their clocks by one hour for every 15° of longitude crossed. For those traveling west, clocks move forward one hour every 15°. Upon crossing the IDL, they must jump forward 24 hours. Conversely, eastward travelers move their clocks back one hour every 15°. When they cross the line, they must move their clocks back 24 hours.

The line is not a straight path because of political and economic needs. It deviates from the 180° meridian to accommodate various island groups. In the north, it passes east of Wrangel Island and the Chukchi Peninsula. It then moves through the Bering Strait between the Diomede Islands. The line bends west of St. Lawrence Island and St. Matthew Island. It also crosses between the U.S. Aleutian Islands and the Russian Commander Islands. These are known as de facto date lines because they rely on national laws. They are not based on international law. In contrast, the nautical date line is a de jure construction. This was established by the 1917 Anglo-French Conference on Time-keeping at Sea. It was intended to help ships adopt standard time zones on the high seas. While ships use these zones for radio communication, they often choose their own time for internal work.
