In the earliest days, humans used simple tools like tally sticks for computation. The Antikythera mechanism, dating to the first century BC, is an important example. It is considered the first known mechanical analog computer and the earliest known geared mechanism.
Modern computing history was shaped by many important pioneers. During the mid-1900s, Alan Turing, J. Presper Eckert, and John Mauchly led early efforts. Turing even began to ask questions about artificial intelligence. In 1941, the electromechanical Zuse Z3 was completed, becoming the world's first programmable computer.
Technological breakthroughs in the mid-20th century changed everything. In the late 1940s, Bell Laboratories developed transistors. This allowed computers to use much less power. For comparison, the Ferranti Mark I used 4050 valves and consumed 25 kilowatts of power. 
Data storage has also seen massive changes over time. Early computers like Colossus used punched tape, which is a strip of paper with holes. 
Today, IT connects to almost every part of modern life. It has changed how we shop, with e-commerce sales reaching $289 billion by 2012. It also manages huge amounts of data through Database Management Systems (DMS). These systems were created in the 1960s to store and retrieve data accurately. In the 1970s, Ted Codd proposed the relational storage model, which uses tables, rows, and columns. This led to the first commercial relational database from Oracle in 1981. As computers become more sophisticated, our reliance on these digital systems continues to grow.
