Design has a very long history. For thousands of years, people used crafts to make things. Skilled workers made objects based on their own training. In the 16th century, people used pattern books to show decorative styles. Architects and shipbuilders also used drawings to plan their work. In 1667, King Louis XIV opened the Gobelins Manufactory in Paris. This was a large place where teams of artists made beautiful furniture and tapestries.
Modern industrial design grew during the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. This happened in the mid-18th century. The term "industrial design" was first used around 1919. Joseph Claude Sinel is often linked to this name. However, the field was already growing. In 1907, the Deutscher Werkbund was founded in Germany. This group helped mix traditional crafts with new factory methods. In 1853, Jacques-Eugène Armengaud published a book about industrial design. It taught people how to do technical drawing. Later, in 1934, Robert Lepper helped start a design program in the USA. He worked at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.
Today, many people study industrial design at universities.

However, as production scales up, the individual control over artistic quality often declines.
