Doctors had to perform many surgeries to fix the bone. Because there were no medicines to dull the pain back then, it was a very hard time. The injury left his leg shorter than the other. He had to limp for the rest of his life, which ended his military career. During his long recovery, he began reading books about the lives of Christ and the saints. These stories inspired him to follow a new path.

Ignatius began a period of deep prayer and reflection. He spent time in a cave near the town of Manresa.

There, he spent many hours each day praying and thinking. He even wrote down his ideas for a special way to pray. This method is called the Spiritual Exercises. It helps people use their imagination to connect with God. He also learned about discernment, which is noticing how different thoughts make the heart feel. Some thoughts brought him peace, while others brought him sadness.

After his time in Spain, Ignatius went to the University of Paris to study. While he was a student, he met six companions who shared his ideas. In 1541, they formed a religious group called the Society of Jesus. People often call them Jesuits. Ignatius became their first leader. He wanted his followers to focus on teaching and missionary work. He also gave them a special vow to obey the Pope. This helped the group work on important projects for the church.

Today, many people still follow the ideas Ignatius started. He is a patron saint for many places and groups. He is the patron saint of the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biscay. In 1922, Pope Pius XI named him the patron saint of all spiritual retreats. A retreat is a special time when people go away to pray and think. People still use his Spiritual Exercises to help them find peace. His journey from a soldier to a saint shows how much one person's life can change.

Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish Catholic priest and theologian. He is most famous for founding the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. This religious order was established in Paris in 1541. Ignatius served as its first Superior General. He envisioned the Society of Jesus as a group dedicated to missionary work and teaching. Unlike other religious orders, the Jesuits took a special fourth vow. This vow required them to be obedient to the Pope for specific projects. This structure helped the Jesuits become key leaders during the Counter-Reformation.

He was the youngest of thirteen children born to noble parents. His family was part of the Basque clan of Loyola in the Crown of Castile. His early life was defined by the values of the minor nobility. Before he entered the religious life, he pursued a career as a soldier. He was driven by a desire for fame and chivalry. He often patterned his life after the stories of knights found in books like Amadís de Gaula.

His military career changed drastically during the Battle of Pamplona on May 20, 1521.

While defending the fortress, a cannonball ricocheted off a wall and struck him. The impact fractured his right leg. He was taken back to his family castle for medical treatment. At that time, doctors did not have anesthetics to dull the pain. Surgeons had to set and rebreak his bones during several operations. These procedures left his right leg shorter than his left. He lived with a limp for the rest of his life.

During his long recovery, Ignatius experienced a profound spiritual conversion. He lacked the romance novels he enjoyed, so he read books about the lives of Christ and the saints instead. One book, the *De Vita Christi* by Ludolph of Saxony, had a massive impact on him. This text used extracts from over sixty Church Fathers to comment on the Gospels. It encouraged a method of meditation called Simple Contemplation. This involves mentally placing oneself inside a Gospel story to visualize the events. This practice became the foundation for his own method of prayer.

Ignatius eventually began a period of intense prayer and asceticism. He traveled to the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, where he gave his fine clothes to the poor. He then moved to the town of Manresa.

For about a year, he lived a very strict life, sometimes praying for seven hours a day. He spent much of this time in a nearby cave. During this time, he developed the fundamentals of his *Spiritual Exercises*. He also practiced discernment, which is the process of noticing how different thoughts affect one's inner peace. He learned that thoughts of worldly heroism often led to dissatisfaction, while spiritual thoughts brought joy.

To prepare for a deeper religious life, Ignatius pursued formal education later in life. He studied theology and Latin at the University of Alcalá. He later moved to France to study at the University of Paris. While studying at the Collège Sainte-Barbe, he gathered six companions who were also students. These men joined him in his mission to serve the church. In 1541, they officially formed the Society of Jesus. This group would go on to have a global influence through education and missions.

Today, the legacy of Ignatius is preserved through the Jesuit order and his writings. He was beatified in 1609 and canonized as a saint on March 12, 1622. His feast day is celebrated annually on July 31. He is the patron saint of the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biscay. Furthermore, he is the patron saint of the Society of Jesus. In 1922, Pope Pius XI declared him the patron saint of all spiritual retreats. His *Spiritual Exercises* remain a widely used tool for meditation and spiritual growth around the world.
