Ichirō Fujiyama was a highly influential Japanese singer and composer.
Fujiyama's musical education was rigorous and formal. He attended the Tokyo Music School, which is now known as the Tokyo University of the Arts.
Financial struggles shaped his early professional life. The 1923 Great Kantō earthquake and the Great Depression caused his family's muslin wholesale business to fail. His family incurred a debt of 38,000 yen and was forced to close the store. To help his family, Fujiyama worked as a music transcriber and a recording artist. However, school regulations prohibited students from performing off-campus. To follow these rules while still earning money, he adopted the stage name Ichirō Fujiyama. He created this name in only five minutes by combining kanji from a friend's name with the name of Mount Fuji.
His career in ryūkōka began with a series of successful collaborations. He debuted with the song "Camp Kouta" and worked closely with the composer Masao Koga. In 1931, Fujiyama and Koga released the song "Is Sake Tears or Sighs?"
Fujiyama's repertoire was incredibly diverse and spanned many decades. He sang Western popular songs, such as "I Kiss Your Hand, Madame." He also recorded songs composed by Shinpei Nakayama and Kunihiko Hashimoto, including "Moeru Gojinka" and "Cheerio!" During World War II, his work included singing gunka, which are military songs. One such example was "Moyuru ōzora," composed by Kosaku Yamada. After the war, he returned to Japan and released more hits. These included "Aoi Sanmyaku," composed by Ryoichi Hattori, and "Nagasaki no Kane," composed by Yuji Koseki.
His life also included significant personal challenges during global conflicts. At the end of World War II, Fujiyama was taken prisoner in Indonesia. After returning to Japan, he continued his prolific career before retiring from popular music in 1954. He transitioned to a role at NHK, where he worked for many years. During this time, he was well known as a conductor for the Kōhaku Uta Gassen. He also spent time composing various songs specifically for Japanese schools to sing.
Fujiyama's impact on Japanese culture remains measurable even after his death. In 1989, following the death of Emperor Shōwa, his song "Aoi Sanmyaku" reached the top of the NHK Top 200 Japanese memorial song rankings. This showed how deeply his music connected with the national identity. He received many prestigious honors, including the People's Honour Award in 1992.
