Ibn Babawayh was born in the town of Qom. This town is in the Khorasan province of modern-day Iran. His father, Ali ibn Babawayh, was also a famous teacher. Ibn Babawayh learned many things from his father at home. He also studied with many local teachers in Qom. This town was a very important center for learning Shia traditions. Some people believe his birth was a miracle. This is because he was born after special prayers by the twelfth Imam, al-Mahdi.

He was a very busy writer throughout his life. Some historical records say he wrote over 300 different works. One scholar named al-Tusi counted 43 of these books in his own collection. Many of these books are now lost to history. However, some of them still exist as manuscripts or printed books. He wrote about many things, including a book called al-I'tiqadat. This book was a summary of what Shia Muslims believe. His pupil, al-Shaykh al-Mufid, even wrote a new version to check his ideas.

In his later years, he lived in a place called Ray. He went there after being invited by a family called the Buyids. A leader named Rukn al-Dawla invited him to live there. Ibn Babawayh was a prominent Shia Muslim scholar, jurist, and theologian. A jurist, or faqīh, is a person who studies and applies religious law. He was of Persian descent and lived during the 10th century. He is recognized as part of the first generation of jurists following the Major Occultation in 941. This was a significant period in Shia history. His work helped define the doctrine of the Twelver Shia community.

His scholarly method focused heavily on the importance of tradition. In religious studies, a tradition is a report or saying passed down through history. Ibn Babawayh preferred these established traditions over speculative theology. Speculative theology involves using human reasoning to explore religious ideas. Most of his writings took the form of compilations of these traditions. He acted as a collector and organizer of religious knowledge. This helped preserve the teachings of the Imams for future generations.

One of his most significant contributions was the book Man la yahduruhu al-faqih. The title is often translated as "Every man his own lawyer." This book is one of the "Four Books" of the Shia Hadith collection. These four books serve as basic authorities for Twelver Shia doctrine. Unlike other scholarly works, this book was designed as a practical reference. It focuses on furu', which refers to the practical regulations of Islamic law. This includes topics like marriage and the pilgrimage.

To make the book useful for ordinary people, Ibn Babawayh made specific choices. He decided not to include the isnads in the text. An isnad is the chain of authorities that connects a report to its original source. While scholars require isnads for deep examination, they can make books very long. Ibn Babawayh omitted them to keep the book concise and abundant in its advantages. He only included the traditions he used to form legal opinions. He wanted to present what he judged to be correct and useful.

Ibn Babawayh's life began in the town of Qom, located in modern-day Iran. Qom was a major center for the study of Shia traditions. He was educated by his father, Ali ibn Babawayh, who was also a leading scholar. Some Shia scholars consider his birth a miracle. They believe he was born after supplications by the twelfth Imam, al-Mahdi. In 966 CE, he left Qom for Baghdad to travel and learn. He traveled extensively to Transoxiana to meet with different Shia communities.

He was an incredibly prolific author during his lifetime. The scholar al-Tusi estimated that Ibn Babawayh wrote over 300 works. However, al-Tusi only had 43 of these books in his possession. Another scholar, al-Najashi, listed 193 works by him. Many of these writings have been lost to time. Some still exist as manuscripts or published books. His works covered many subjects, including moral instruction and the philosophy of Islamic ordinances. His book al-I'tiqadat served as a summary of Shia creeds.

In his final years, Ibn Babawayh lived in Ray. He was invited there by Rukn al-Dawla of the Buyid family. Although he was treated well, his teaching faced certain restrictions. An official named ibn 'Abbad limited his ability to teach. This was part of a broader trend affecting many traditionalist scholars at the time. Ibn Babawayh died in Ray in 991 CE. He was likely over 70 years old. He is buried at the Ebn-e Babooyeh cemetery in modern-day Iran.
