Many people helped develop this idea over a long time. An inventor named Emmanuel Denis Farcot received a British patent in 1869. Later, Enrico Forlanini began working on hydrofoils in 1898. He used a special "ladder" foil system. Between 1899 and 1901, John Thornycroft worked on different boat models. Alexander Graham Bell also studied these ideas deeply. He began his own experiments in the summer of 1908. Bell and his engineer Casey Baldwin worked in Nova Scotia.

Bell's team built a famous boat called the HD-4. It used Renault engines to reach high speeds. On September 9, 1919, the HD-4 set a world marine speed record. This record lasted for twenty years.

In 1952, the Supramar company launched the first commercial hydrofoil. It was named the PT10 "Freccia d'Oro." This boat could carry 32 passengers. It could travel at 30 knots. The Soviet Union also built many successful hydrofoils. Their Meteor type was very popular. More than 400 of those units were built.

There are two main ways to design these foils. Some are called surface-piercing foils. These V-shaped foils rise above the water surface. Other foils are fully submerged. These stay completely under the water. These submerged foils are more stable in waves. They make the ride more comfortable for people. However, they are not self-stabilizing. When a watercraft uses this technology, the boat is often called a hydrofoil. The main purpose of a hydrofoil is to lift the boat's hull out of the water. As the craft gains speed, the foils generate enough lift to raise the hull. This process significantly decreases hull drag. Reducing drag allows for much greater speeds and better fuel efficiency.

The physics behind a hydrofoil relies on hydrodynamic mechanics. A foil shape moves smoothly through the water to deflect the flow downward. According to the Euler equations, this downward deflection exerts an upward force on the foil. This movement also creates a pressure difference via Bernoulli's principle. There is higher pressure on the bottom of the foil and reduced pressure on the top. This difference in pressure, along with a velocity difference, creates the lift. Eventually, the upward lift balances the weight of the craft. At this point, the vessel reaches equilibrium and stays at a steady height.

There are two primary types of hydrofoil configurations. The first type is known as surface-piercing foils. These often use V-shaped structures that rise above the water surface when the boat is foilborne. The second type consists of fully submerged foils. These are often shaped like inverted T-shapes and stay completely under the water. Fully submerged foils are less affected by wave action. This makes them more stable at sea and more comfortable for passengers. However, they are not self-stabilizing. They require sensors, a computer, and active surfaces to adjust the angle of attack continuously.

The history of the hydrofoil involves many dedicated inventors. Emmanuel Denis Farcot received a British patent for a similar concept in 1869. In 1898, Italian inventor Enrico Forlanini began working on a "ladder" foil system. Between 1899 and 1901, British designer John Thornycroft developed models with a stepped hull. Alexander Graham Bell became a major figure in hydrofoil development. After reading about the technology, Bell began experiments in 1908 with engineer Casey Baldwin. They worked at the Beinn Bhreagh estate in Nova Scotia.

Bell's team achieved incredible results with their HD-4 vessel. The HD-4 used Renault engines to achieve rapid acceleration and great stability. On September 9, 1919, the HD-4 set a world marine speed record. This record remained unbroken for two decades. In the 1950s, the Supramar company launched the first commercial hydrofoil. This boat, the PT10 "Freccia d'Oro," could carry 32 passengers at 30 knots. The Soviet Union also became a leader in this field. Despite their speed, hydrofoils face specific engineering challenges. One major limit is a phenomenon called cavitation. This occurs when foils move through the water at speeds above 50 knots. Cavitation disturbs the lift created by the foils and can bend the lifting surface. This issue limits the top speed of even modern hydrofoils. Additionally, building and maintaining hydrofoils is more complex than building standard boats. Because of this complexity, they are often more expensive. Most hydrofoil craft are relatively small. They are mainly used as high-speed passenger ferries to offset these high costs.

Hydrofoils have been used for both civilian and military purposes. In Germany, a 17-ton VS-6 hydrofoil was tested in 1941. It reached speeds of 47 knots while acting as a mine layer. In Canada, the military developed the HMCS Bras d'Or. This surface-piercing craft reached a maximum speed of 63 knots during trials. The Soviet Union also used hydrofoils for fast attack craft. These included the Sarancha class missile boat and the Turya class torpedo boat. These various designs show how hydrofoil technology connects to many different fields of engineering and naval use.
