A new era began with the Asaf Jahi dynasty. Asaf Jah I was a Mughal viceroy. He declared his sovereignty in 1724. This started the rule of the Nizams. Hyderabad served as the imperial capital for the Asaf Jahis from 1769 to 1948. The city was part of a princely state during the British Raj. It housed a British Residency and a cantonment. The name "Hyderabad" has interesting possible origins. It means "Haydar's City" or "Lion City." This comes from the name Haydar, which means lion. It honors Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Talib. Another legend involves a woman named Bhagmati. Some say the founder named the city Bhagya-nagar after her. She later adopted the title Hyder Mahal. This may be how the name changed to Hyderabad.
