The prefecture is also home to Himeji Castle. This castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 
The region has faced significant challenges in the past. In 1995, a large earthquake hit the area. This was the Great Hanshin earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.9 Mw. It caused severe devastation in southern Hyōgo. Major parts of Kobe, Awaji, Nishinomiya, and Ashiya were destroyed. The disaster killed nearly 6,500 people. This event impacted the neighboring Osaka Prefecture as well.
Today, Hyōgo is a powerhouse of industry and science. It is part of the Hanshin Industrial Region. The prefecture relies on agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. However, it is also known for heavy industry and medical technology. Kobe Port is one of the largest ports in Japan. 
Nature is well-protected throughout the prefecture. About 20% of the land is designated as Natural Parks.
