In many places, it rains a lot in summer. Big storms can bring rain quickly. 
In some lands, the winter is very dry. In other lands, it might snow a little bit. The weather can change a lot from summer to winter. It is a very interesting kind of weather.
Some parts of the world have a humid subtropical climate. 

These climates are often found on the southeast side of continents. You can find them in parts of China, the United States, and Australia. Some areas are near the ocean. In these spots, the weather stays mild. Other areas are far from the sea. These inland places have bigger changes between summer and winter.
In parts of East Asia, winters can be quite cold. This is due to a large, cold air mass called the Siberian anticyclone. In some places like Northern Vietnam, it rarely snows. However, near the Caspian Sea, snow can fall for a short time. In India, summers can be very hot and dry before the rainy season starts. 
A humid subtropical climate is a special way the weather works in certain parts of the world. 

There is a specific way the seasons change in these places. During the summer, the sun is very strong and heats the ground. This heat causes quick, intense thunderstorms to build up in the sky. 
Different experts have found different ways to group these climates. A famous scientist named Wladimir Köppen created a system to name weather types. He used letters like Cfa and Cwa to describe these areas. C stands for mild temperate, and f means it is fully humid. The letter a means the summer is hot. Another scientist named Trewartha created a different system. He said a place is humid subtropical if it has at least eight months with a mean temperature above 10°C.
These climates appear in many different countries with unique details. In China, the climate can be very dry in the winter, which can be hard for farming. In the United States, places like Charleston, South Carolina, experience this weather. 
Understanding these climates helps us see how the world is connected. If a place is near the ocean, the water keeps the temperature steady. This is what happens in the coastal parts of South Africa. But if a place is far inland, the seasons feel much sharper. You might feel a much bigger difference between a hot July and a cold January. This is why the weather in the middle of a continent feels different than the weather by the sea.
A humid subtropical climate is a specific type of temperate climate found in various parts of the world. 
The seasonal patterns of this climate are driven by specific atmospheric processes. During the summer, a deep current of tropical air often dominates the region. The sun's angle is strong, which leads to intense surface heating. This heat causes convective thundershowers, which are brief but intense storms, to develop daily. In many areas, a seasonal reversal of winds known as a monsoon causes a massive peak in summer rainfall. 
Scientists use different systems to classify these weather patterns. Under the Köppen climate classification, these areas are often labeled as Cfa or Cwa. The "C" stands for mild temperate, while the "f" means fully humid and the "w" indicates a dry winter. The "a" signifies that the summers are hot. Another system, the Trewartha climate classification, defines a humid subtropical climate by temperature duration. In this system, a region must have at least eight months where the mean temperature stays above 10°C. 
Geography plays a major role in how these climates feel. Coastal locations often experience a maritime influence, which keeps temperatures more moderate. For example, the humid subtropical zones in southern and eastern South Africa stay milder in winter due to the ocean. In contrast, inland areas like parts of China and the United States show much sharper seasonal contrasts. These inland regions experience more pronounced differences between the heat of summer and the chill of winter. This creates a gradient between the tropical coasts and the colder interiors.
In East Asia, the climate is heavily influenced by the Siberian anticyclone. This large system of high pressure brings much colder winter temperatures than what is seen in the Americas or Australia. In this region, the winter monsoon is very well developed, leading to a strong dry season. However, some specific areas like the San'in region in Japan receive more rain in the winter due to the westerlies. In parts of China, the summer rainfall is so heavy that drought in the Cwa zone can be catastrophic for agriculture.
South Asia offers a very different version of this climate. In northern India and Pakistan, summers can begin very dry with frequent dust storms. This is typical of arid or semi-arid climates, but it changes once the monsoon arrives. During the monsoon season from July to September, the region becomes extremely humid, with humidity levels often exceeding 90%. Cities like New Delhi and Lahore show these patterns, though they receive slightly less annual rainfall than a typical humid subtropical zone. In Nepal, cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara also feature this climate, though they avoid the extreme heat found in other South Asian locations.
Other unique pockets of this climate exist in Western Asia and Southeast Asia. Along the coasts of the Caspian and Black Seas, the climate is more moderate. In places like Iran, Georgia, and Turkey, annual rainfall can be quite heavy, sometimes exceeding 1,000 mm. These areas may even see short periods of snowfall during the winter. In Northern Vietnam, the climate is characterized by hot, wet summers and cool, dry winters. Unlike many other subtropical zones, these Southeast Asian locations seldom experience snow.
