Life was not always easy for him. He had to leave his home for a time. He was even held in prison by Austria and Russia.

Hugo Kołłątaj was a central figure of the Polish Enlightenment. 
Kołłątaj's intellectual journey began with deep study. He was born on April 1, 1750, in Dederkały Wielkie. He studied law at the Kraków Academy, which is now known as Jagiellonian University. He later traveled to Vienna and Italy to study philosophy and theology.
One of his greatest achievements was reforming higher education. As the rector of the Kraków Academy from 1783 to 1786, he introduced major changes. He replaced Latin with the Polish language for university lectures. 
In politics, Kołłątaj was a radical reformer. He led an informal group known as "Kołłątaj's Forge" within the Patriotic Party. 
His political work culminated in the Constitution of 3 May 1791. Kołłątaj was one of its co-authors. For his service, he received high honors like the Order of the White Eagle. 
Kołłątaj remained active even during times of exile and imprisonment. He participated in the Kościuszko Uprising in 1794. During this revolt, he helped write the Uprising Act and the Połaniec Manifesto. 
In his later years, Kołłątaj turned toward the natural sciences. He wrote "The Physico-Moral Order" in 1811. This work focused on a socio-ethical system based on the equality of all people. He used ideas from the field of physiocracy to support his views. 
Hugo Kołłątaj died on February 28, 1812. He was buried in the Powązki Cemetery. Although he died feeling abandoned by his peers, his legacy is massive. He is remembered as one of the greatest minds of his era.
