Hua Mulan is a legendary Chinese folk heroine from the Northern and Southern dynasties era. This period spanned from the 4th to the 6th century AD. The most foundational version of her story is the Ballad of Mulan. This folk song was likely composed during the Northern Wei regime between 386 and 535 AD. The ballad describes Mulan's decision to protect her elderly father. Because no other male relatives of age were available, she disguised herself as a man. She prepared for her journey by visiting different markets. She bought a fine horse from the eastern market and a saddle from the western market. She also acquired a bridle and reins from the south and a long whip from the north.

Mulan's military service was long and distinguished. She fought against nomadic tribes, such as the Rouran, beyond the northern frontier. Some versions of the legend state she traveled and served for twelve years. During this time, she participated in many battles. The ballad mentions the sound of the sentry gong and the moonlight on her metal armor. After the campaign, the veterans returned to meet the emperor. The emperor, referred to as the Son of Heaven, offered her a high-ranking position. This specific office was called shangshulang, a ministerial role in the central government. Mulan declined this high office. She asked only for a swift mount to return to her hometown.

The historical setting of the ballad is often linked to the Northern Wei dynasty. This dynasty was founded by the Tuoba clan of the ethnic Xianbei people. The Xianbei were a proto-Mongolic group of nomads from the northern steppes. As they ruled northern China, they became sinified, meaning they adopted Chinese culture. The Northern Wei emperors held dual titles: the Chinese "Son of Heaven" and the nomadic "Khagan." This dual identity is reflected in the ballad's description of the sovereign. The military conflicts often took place near locations like the Black Mountain and the Yan Mountains. These sites correspond to modern areas in Inner Mongolia and central Mongolia.

Different versions of the story provide different family names for the heroine. In the Musical Records of Old and New, her given name is unknown. Some scholars suggest "Mulan" might be a surname. Because the Northern Wei was ruled by the Xianbei, some believe she may have been Xianbei rather than ethnic Han Chinese. The name Mulan might be a sinified version of the Xianbei word "umran," meaning prosperous. Later works offer different names. The book Female Mulan uses the surname Zhu. The Romance of Sui and Tang uses the surname Wei. The most popular name today is Hua. This was introduced by the playwright Xu Wei. It is a poetic name associated with the "lily magnolia."

Later adaptations introduced more complex and sometimes tragic plot twists. In the 17th-century novel Romance of Sui and Tang, written by Chu Renhuo, the setting changes. Mulan serves under Heshana Khan of the Western Turkic Khaganate. In this version, she becomes sworn sisters with a female warrior named Xianniang. This version also includes a tragic conclusion. After discovering her father had died and her mother had remarried, Mulan faces a difficult choice. Rather than becoming a concubine for the Khan, she dies by suicide. Some commentators view this act as a message regarding political loyalty.

The legend of Mulan has had a massive impact on global culture. It has been adapted into numerous plays, books, and films. One notable stage production was a 1917 play starring Mei Lanfang. The character has also appeared in modern musical adaptations.
