Aiken did not stop with a single machine; he developed a whole series of computers. In 1947, he completed the Harvard Mark II. He then moved on to work on the Mark III and the Mark IV models. Each version represented a step forward in technology. The Mark III introduced some electronic components to the process. The Mark IV was even more advanced because it was entirely electronic. These later models utilized different ways to store information. The Mark III and Mark IV used magnetic drum memory. The Mark IV also utilized magnetic-core memory to handle data. 
Beyond building hardware, Aiken was a vital educator in the new field of computer science. In 1947, he established a master's program for computer science at Harvard. This was a significant milestone because it occurred nearly a decade before other universities began offering similar programs. This program served as a training ground for many future scientists. Many of these students went on to earn their doctoral dissertations under Aiken's guidance. His leadership helped ensure that the next generation was ready to use these new digital tools. 
Aiken’s career was marked by many prestigious honors and professional roles. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1947. In 1970, he received the IEEE Edison Medal. This award recognized his meritorious career and his pioneering contributions to large-scale digital computers. He also held several honorary degrees from institutions like the University of Wisconsin and Technische Hochschule, Darmstadt. During his life, he served as a Commander in the United States Navy Reserve. Even after retiring at age 60, he remained active in the business and academic worlds. 
In his later years, Aiken moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There, he founded Howard Aiken Industries Incorporated, a consulting firm. This company helped businesses that were struggling to recover. He also served as a Distinguished Professor of Information at the University of Miami. His expertise was sought after by major companies, including Lockheed Martin and Monsanto. Aiken passed away on March 14, 1973, while on a consulting trip in St. Louis, Missouri. His legacy remains in every programmable device we use today.
