This channel was not always this big. It started as a natural watercourse called Buffalo Bayou. To make it work for huge ships, workers used a process called dredging. Dredging means digging out mud and sand from the bottom. This makes the water much deeper and wider.

People have used these waters to move goods since at least 1836. In 1826, a man named John Richardson Harris started a town called Harrisburg. He even used his own ship, the Rights of Man, to move supplies. Later, Nicholas Clopper and his team sailed a ship called the Little Zoe. They found the waters of Galveston Bay to be quite difficult. After a huge hurricane in 1900, leaders decided to plan a safer port. On June 14, 1914, the steamship Satilla arrived as the first deepwater ship.

Over the years, the channel has grown many times. In 1910, residents voted to spend $1,250,000 to dredge it to 25 feet. By 1922, the depth was increased to 30 feet. In 1935, a project finished that made the channel 34 feet deep. Today, the water is much deeper, reaching 43 to 45 feet.

In 2022, a new expansion called Project 11 began. This project aims to make some parts 46.5 feet deep. The channel is so important that it became a National Civil Engineering Landmark in 1987.

History shows that navigation in this area has always been a challenge. In 1826, John Richardson Harris established the town of Harrisburg on Buffalo Bayou. He used his schooner, the *Rights of Man*, to export cotton and hides. Later, Nicholas Clopper and his traders sailed the *Little Zoe* through Galveston Bay.
