An adult mouse typically has a body length from nose to tail base of about 75 to 100 mm. Their tails are also quite long, and their weight usually falls around 12 to 30 grams. Their tails play a vital role in thermoregulation, which is the process of maintaining a stable body temperature.

They use a system of arteriovenous anastomoses to control blood flow to the tail. By increasing blood flow, they can raise the skin temperature on the tail by as much as 10°C to lose body heat. The tail also helps them with balance while climbing or during a behavior called tripoding. Tripoding is when a mouse stands on its hind legs to eat or fight.

There are several recognized subspecies of the house mouse. The Western European house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus, is one major group. This subspecies includes both the fancy mice kept as pets and the laboratory mice used in science.

Another group is the Southeastern Asian house mouse, Mus musculus castaneus. The Eastern European house mouse, Mus musculus musculus, is also widely recognized. More recently, scientists identified the pygmy house mouse, Mus musculus gentilulus, in the Arabian Peninsula and Madagascar. There is also the Southwestern Asian house mouse, Mus musculus bactrianus. Some of these groups, like the Japanese house mouse, are actually hybrids of different subspecies.

Studies suggest that the species originally originated in Southwestern Asia. From there, different populations migrated to different parts of the world. For example, the castaneus subspecies emerged from an ancestral population in the Indian subcontinent around 700,000 years ago. Later, an ancestral population moved to Iran around 360,000 years ago to form the domesticus subspecies. Around 260,000 years ago, another group moved to Afghanistan to form the musculus subspecies. This movement shows how environmental changes and migration shape species over time.

In urban areas, mice are often commensal and live in high densities due to abundant food. In these crowded groups, they often switch from territorial behavior to a social hierarchy. This reduces aggression between females, allowing them to breed cooperatively. In contrast, noncommensal mice living in open fields or shrubs have much larger territories. These wild populations are often limited by the availability of food and water. Because resources are scarce, female-female aggression is much higher in these groups than in urban mice.

While they can see, they are dichromats, meaning they have only two types of color-sensing cone cells. This is different from humans, who are trichromats with three types of cones. Mice also rely heavily on their sense of smell through pheromones. They use a special organ called the vomeronasal organ, or Jacobson's organ, to detect these scents.

Pheromones can even change how other mice behave. For example, the Bruce effect occurs when the scent of an unfamiliar male causes a female to terminate a pregnancy.

Finally, the mouse has unique physical adaptations for survival. They use their whiskers, or vibrissae, to sense surfaces and air movements. This is very important for a behavior called thigmotaxis, where they stay close to walls and edges. Their bodies are also designed for rapid movement, with a normal running stride of about 100 mm. Even their internal anatomy is specialized, such as having a second, small thymus organ in the neck near the trachea. All these small details work together to make the house mouse one of the most successful mammals on Earth.
