Long ago, people used horses to pull cars. 
Metal tracks were better than dirt roads. In rain or snow, dirt roads got muddy. Wheels could sink into the mud. But the metal tracks stayed strong. 
Horses pulled many people at once. They could pull a heavy load. This was better than a small wagon.
Many cities used these horse cars. Some cities in America used them. People in India used them too.
Later, new tools changed how we travel. Electric power replaced the horses. Now, we use different ways to move.

Tracks also helped in bad weather. Old streets were often just dirt. Wheels would sink into deep mud during rain or snow. The metal tracks stayed strong and kept the cars moving.
Many cities used horsecar networks. In the US, New Orleans had one in 1832. By 1860, many big cities had them. In India, the first trams ran in 1873.
But keeping horses was hard work. A company had to feed and groom them. They also had to clean up much manure. Eventually, new tools changed things. Electric streetcars began to replace the horses in the 1880s.

Different regions adopted horsecar technology at various times. The very first passenger tram service began in 1807 in Wales. This was the Swansea and Mumbles Railway, which used existing freight lines. 

Many cities developed massive networks of these tracks during the mid-to-late 1800s. By 1860, major American cities like New York, Chicago, and Boston already had horsecar systems. In India, the first horse-drawn trams ran in 1873 between Sealdah and Armenian Ghat Street. The Calcutta Tramway Company was later formed in London in 1880. By the end of the 19th century, this company managed 166 tram cars and 1,000 horses. In Toronto, the Toronto Street Railway began replacing omnibuses in 1861. They used a unique "broad gauge," which is a specific width between the rails. This wide gauge was necessary because they used a step rail. The horsecar used flanged wheels on the upper step, while wagons used the lower step. This specific Toronto gauge is still used today by the Toronto subway system.
Despite their success, operating a horsecar system presented many logistical challenges. Animals could only work for a few hours each day. A typical horse pulled a car for about twelve miles over four or five hours.
Technological shifts eventually led to the decline of the horsecar. In the 1880s, electric-powered streetcars began to emerge. The first commercially successful electric tram opened in 1881 in Lichterfelde, Germany. 
While most systems are gone, some horsecar traditions still exist. In the Yucatán, Mexico, some horsecar lines still operate for passengers and freight.
