In mammals, true horns are primarily found among ruminant artiodactyls. These are specific groups of hoofed animals. Common examples include members of the families Antilocapridae, such as the pronghorn, and Bovidae, which includes cattle, goats, and antelope.

In cattle, the horns arise from subcutaneous connective tissue located under the scalp. Over time, these horns fuse to the underlying frontal bone of the skull.
