Orangutans, gorillas, and chimpanzees are very close to humans. In fact, human DNA is about 98.4% the same as chimpanzee DNA. This shows we share a common history. Long ago, these groups split apart. Scientists study how these groups changed over a very long time. This way of looking at history is called evolution. About 14 million years ago, the first common ancestor lived. Later, the orangutan group split away from the other three. About 12 million years ago, the other great apes changed further. Gorillas split off first, and then chimpanzees split from the human line.

Learning about these animals can be hard because of how names change. In the past, scientists used the word "hominid" only for humans. Now, the word "hominid" includes all the great apes. There are even more specific names like "hominin" for humans and chimpanzees. These names help scientists organize the different branches of the family tree. Some famous fossils include those of the australopithecines or the genus Ardipithecus. In East Africa, fossils like Sahelanthropus tchadensis are very old. Scientists also look at DNA to see how close species are. For example, human DNA is about 98.4% identical to chimpanzee DNA. This tiny difference shows just how much we have in common.

Understanding the classification of these animals requires navigating complex scientific terminology. In the past, the term "hominid" was used strictly to describe humans and their extinct relatives. However, modern biology has revised these groupings to reflect true evolutionary relationships. Today, "hominid" refers to all great apes, including orangutans. Within this family, the subfamily Homininae includes gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans. The subfamily Ponginae is reserved for orangutans.

The evolutionary history of the Hominidae spans millions of years. Molecular evidence suggests that the lineage of the "lesser apes," known as gibbons, diverged from the great apes roughly 18 to 12 million years ago. The orangutan lineage, or the subfamily Ponginae, split from the other great apes about 12 million years ago.

The most recent common ancestor of all Hominidae lived approximately 14 million years ago. Following this, the ancestors of gorillas and chimpanzees split from the line leading to humans between 8 and 4 million years ago. Specifically, the gorilla genus split off first, followed by the chimpanzee genus.

Fossil evidence provides a window into these ancient transitions, though the record is often incomplete. In East Africa, researchers have found fossils like Sahelanthropus tchadensis, dated to 7 million years ago, and Orrorin tugenensis, dated to 6 million years ago. Other important groups include the Ardipithecus and the australopithecines.

Finding these fossils is difficult because rainforest soils are often acidic. This acidity can dissolve bones before they can become fossils. Despite these challenges, the DNA of modern humans is approximately 98.4% identical to that of chimpanzees, confirming our very close biological connection.

Physical characteristics vary significantly across the different genera of the Hominidae. All great apes are tailless primates, but they differ greatly in size. The bonobo is the smallest living species, while the eastern gorilla is the largest. In most species, males are larger and stronger than females, a trait known as sexual dimorphism.

Human teeth and jaws are notably smaller relative to body size than those of other apes. This may be an adaptation to using tools or eating cooked food since the end of the Pleistocene epoch.

Behavioral patterns also define how these primates interact with their environments. Most species are predominantly quadrupedal, meaning they move on all fours, but they can all use their hands for gathering or nesting. Many build complex sleeping platforms in trees, though chimpanzees and gorillas also build nests on the ground. All great apes are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. While chimpanzees and orangutans primarily eat fruit, gorillas can eat shoots and bamboo when fruit is scarce.

These biological and behavioral studies have significant real-world implications. Because of the close genetic ties between humans and other great apes, organizations like the Great Ape Project argue that nonhuman great apes should be considered "persons" with basic rights. This debate has led to practical changes in how science is conducted. Currently, twenty-nine countries have instituted bans on scientific testing to protect great apes. This intersection of biology, ethics, and law shows how studying the Hominidae affects the world today.
