Bhabha also helped identify a particle called the meson. He argued that the name should follow Greek naming traditions. This work helped confirm ideas about how particles behave at high speeds.
Bhabha's path to physics was not what his family first planned. He was born in 1909 into a wealthy Parsi family. His father wanted him to study mechanical engineering at Cambridge University. The goal was for Bhabha to work in the family's steel business. However, Bhabha felt that engineering was not his true nature. He wrote to his father explaining that he was "burning with a desire" to do physics. He believed a person should only do what they are passionately fond of. 
Bhabha was a man of many talents beyond science. During his youth, he studied music, painting, and gardening. He took lessons in the violin and the piano. At age seventeen, he won second place in an art exhibition. He even designed sets for musical performances at Cambridge. This wide range of interests made him a very well-rounded person. The famous scientist C.V. Raman even called him the "modern equivalent of Leonardo da Vinci."
After returning to India during World War II, Bhabha became a vital leader. He served as the founding director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). He also led the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET). This institution was later renamed the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to honor him. 
Bhabha received many prestigious honors for his scientific achievements. He won the Adams Prize in 1942. In 1954, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize for Physics several times between 1951 and 1956. His life ended prematurely in 1966. He died in the crash of Air India Flight 101. He was 56 years old at the time of the accident.
