Its harbour is a very significant feature. It is the second-deepest natural port in the world. Much of the waterfront is made of reclaimed land.

The geography of the region is quite complex. The city is built mostly on Jurassic dolerite rock. This rock forms the hills around the inner city. There are also areas of Triassic siltstone and Permian mudstone. The Western Shore stretches from the Derwent Valley through Glenorchy. This area is bounded by peaks that average around 1,200 metres. These include Mount Wellington, Mount Hull, and Mount Faulkner.

The Derwent estuary flows out into Storm Bay. This area is wrapped by the South Arm Peninsula and Betsey Island. The Eastern Shore hugs the Meehan Range. This range has distinctive summits like Mount Direction and Flagstaff Hill. These areas sit on much younger Quaternary deposits.

The land has a long history of human connection. For possibly 35,000 years, Aboriginal Tasmanians lived here. They generally refer to themselves as Palawa or Pakana. The local Muwinina people called this area nipaluna. This name includes features like Kunanyi and the River Derwent. The river is known as Timtumili Minanya. Different groups had names for different parts of the land. For example, the Mumirimina called the Clarence Plains naniyilipata. The area known as Kangaroo Point was called trumanyapayna. These names show how deeply the people knew the landscape.

European settlement began in 1803 at Risdon Cove. This was a military camp built because of British concerns about French explorers. In 1804, Captain David Collins moved the settlement to Sullivans Cove. He named it Hobart Town after Lord Hobart. This was the British Secretary of State for War and the Colonies.

This makes Hobart Australia's second-oldest capital city, after Sydney. The early years were difficult for the local Aboriginal population. Violent conflict and new diseases reduced their numbers significantly. Many were eventually forcibly exiled to Flinders Island. This changed the makeup of the population very quickly.

As time passed, the economy of Hobart shifted many times. Whaling became a major industry in the area. For a time, Hobart was the main whaling port for the Southern Ocean. The city also grew through shipbuilding and sealing trades. In the early 20th century, mining and agriculture caused an economic boom.

It also serves as a home port for Antarctic operations. This includes both Australian and French missions.

Modern Hobart is a major destination for many people. It is known for its convict-era architecture. Visitors often go to the Salamanca Market or the MONA museum. MONA is the largest private museum in the Southern Hemisphere. The city has also faced difficult moments in its history. In 1967, large fires claimed 64 lives in Hobart. In 1975, the Tasman Bridge was destroyed in a major disaster.
