Hitachi is a Japanese multinational conglomerate headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo.

To manage its massive scale, Hitachi organizes its corporate activities into three main sections. The first is Digital Systems and Services, which focuses on information technology. The second section is Green Energy and Mobility, which handles clean power and transportation. The third section is called Connective Industries. This structure helps the company balance different technologies. It allows them to manage everything from massive infrastructure to complex digital software. This organization helps them serve many different global markets effectively.
The history of the company began in 1910 in Hitachi, Ibaraki.
Throughout the 20th century, Hitachi made many technological breakthroughs. In 1924, the company completed Japan's first mainline electric locomotive.
Hitachi also made significant impacts in the fields of energy and semiconductors. In 1977, they completed the Fugen nuclear power station, which used MOX fuel. MOX fuel is a way to use plutonium from nuclear waste efficiently. In the late 1970s, the company developed the Twin-Well Hi-CMOS process. This helped the global semiconductor industry by creating more efficient transistors. This technology allowed Hitachi chips to match high performance while using much less power. By 1987, Japanese companies, including Hitachi, were among the three largest semiconductor manufacturers by revenue.
The company faced a very difficult period during the 2008 financial crisis. During the 2008 fiscal year, Hitachi recorded a loss of 787.3 billion yen. This was the largest corporate loss in Japanese history at that time. The company had many departments that were no longer efficient. To fix this, leadership began a major restructuring process. They sold many unprofitable operations to focus on new areas. Between 2008 and 2018, they reduced their number of subsidiaries from 400 to 202. This shift helped the company return to profitability by March 2011.
Today, Hitachi is a highly globalized company with a massive international presence. In the 2023 fiscal year, it generated 9.7 trillion yen in total revenue. About 61% of that money came from international markets. Asia provided 22% of the revenue, while Europe and North America each provided 16%.
