In 1945, Hiroshima experienced a devastating historical event. On August 6, at 8:15 a.m., the United States Army Air Forces dropped an atomic bomb. The weapon was named "Little Boy." It was dropped from a Boeing B-29 Superfortress called the Enola Gay.
After the war, the city focused on massive reconstruction efforts. The Japanese government passed the Hiroshima Peace Memorial City Construction Law in 1949. This law provided financial aid and land for rebuilding.
Today, Hiroshima is recognized globally as a City of Peace. It hosts international conferences regarding peace and social issues. The city government actively advocates for the abolition of all nuclear weapons.
