This area is now called the Toli Valley in the Tolikara Regency. Their journey also led to the discovery of Lake Habema.

Other major discoveries shaped the history of the highlands. In 1938, Richard Archbold led an expedition from the American Museum of Natural History. He accidentally discovered the Baliem Valley, which is home to the Dani Tribe. The Dutch explorers named this the "Groote Vallei," or the Great Valley.

In 1954, missionaries from the American Christian and Missionary Alliance arrived. They flew into the Baliem Valley to introduce Christianity. At the same time, the Dutch government established a post to increase its authority. This led to the creation of villages and airfields. The founding of the government post on December 10, 1956, is celebrated as the founding day of Wamena.

The political status of the region changed significantly in the 20th century. Dutch rule ended when Dutch New Guinea was annexed into Indonesia in 1963. In 1968, the Indonesian government began forming regional councils. Tribal leaders like Alex Doga and Kurulu Mabel helped organize the PEPERA process. This process was the Act of Free Choice. These leaders eventually met with President Sukarno at Merdeka Palace. They declared their loyalty to the republic through a blood oath. This event led to the establishment of the Jayawijaya Regency. This regency was later divided into several smaller regencies over the years.

Highland Papua is a very young province in the Indonesian system. It was formally established on July 25, 2022. President Joko Widodo signed Law No. 16/2022 to make this official. It was one of three very young provinces created at that time. The province is made up of eight regencies that were once part of the Jayawijaya Regency. As of mid-2025, the population is estimated at 1,484,870 people. This includes 791,070 males and 693,780 females. The population grows by about 17,000 residents every year.
