Kojima began his career at a company called Konami in 1986. At first, he was a bit disappointed with his job. He wanted to make games for the Famicom system. Instead, he was assigned to work with the MSX computer. The MSX could only show 16 colors at one time. This made designing very hard for him. He even worked as an assistant on a game called Penguin Adventure. This game added many new features like different levels and endings.

His most famous work started because of a hard problem. He was asked to make a combat game called Metal Gear. However, the computer could not handle many bullets or enemies. To fix this, Kojima changed the whole idea. He made the game about a prisoner trying to escape. This became one of the first stealth games ever made. Players had to be quiet to avoid being caught. It was released in Japan on July 13, 1987.

Kojima also created a game called Snatcher in 1988. This was a graphic adventure game with a cyberpunk style. He worked hard to make it look like a film or an anime. He even made a version called SD Snatcher with cute, small characters. In 1990, he also made Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. This sequel added new ways to play, like crawling on the ground. It also let players use noise to trick guards. These ideas changed how many people played video games.

In 2005, he started his own studio called Kojima Productions. He later made the popular game Death Stranding in 2019. He is even working on a sequel called Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

Kojima is most famous for the Metal Gear franchise and the game Death Stranding. He is also working on the sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, scheduled for 2025.

Kojima's interest in storytelling was shaped by his early life in Tokyo and Osaka. His parents had a nightly tradition of watching films together. They watched many genres, including European films, horror, and Westerns. Because his parents did not limit the content, Kojima was exposed to many different types of visual storytelling. In high school, he even began making his own films using a Super 8 camera. He once even tricked his parents into funding a trip to an island to use as a filming location.

Kojima joined the video game publisher Konami in 1986. At the time, video game design was not seen as a high-status career. In fact, the Japanese language did not even have a specific word for a video game designer yet. He initially felt disappointed because he was assigned to the MSX computer division. The MSX hardware was quite restrictive, featuring a 16-color palette. When certain colors like pink or purple were excluded, designers were left with only eight usable colors. His first major role was as an assistant director for Penguin Adventure.

His most significant breakthrough came from a technical limitation. Konami asked him to lead a project called Metal Gear, which was intended to be a combat game. However, the MSX hardware could not handle more than four bullets at once. This meant he could only have two or three enemies on screen. To solve this, Kojima shifted the focus from fighting to escaping. Inspired by the film The Great Escape, he created a stealth game. In Metal Gear, released in 1987, players control Solid Snake to avoid detection. This helped establish the stealth genre in video games.

Following this success, Kojima explored different styles of play. In 1988, he released Snatcher, a graphic adventure game with a cyberpunk influence. He and his team treated the project like an anime or a film. This approach helped define the cinematic presentation that became his trademark. He also created a remake called SD Snatcher in 1990. The "SD" stands for "super deformed," which refers to a style of drawing characters with small, cute proportions. This version used a first-person, turn-based battle system where players could aim at specific body parts.

Kojima continued to evolve the Metal Gear series with Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake in 1990. This sequel introduced advanced stealth mechanics that were new to the industry. Players could now crouch, crawl on the ground, and disarm mines. They could also use noise to attract guards or watch for enemy view cones. These mechanics added a layer of strategy to the gameplay. Throughout his career at Konami, he also worked on the Boktai series and produced the Zone of the Enders series.

In 2005, Kojima founded Kojima Productions within Konami. He eventually became the vice president of Konami Digital Entertainment in 2011. His time there included work on the highly acclaimed horror teaser P.T., which was intended for the game Silent Hills. However, Konami cancelled the project in 2015, leading to Kojima's departure from the company. In December 2015, he established Kojima Productions as an independent studio. This move allowed him to create games entirely outside of the Konami structure. His career demonstrates how technical constraints can lead to massive innovations in art and technology.
