Sometimes, the inside of your belly pushes out.
A hernia happens when an organ or tissue pushes out through a weak spot.
Many hernias happen in the groin area. These are called inguinal hernias. They are very common in men. Women often get femoral hernias. These are hernias near the top of the leg. Some hernias happen near the belly button. These are called umbilical hernias. A hiatus hernia happens when the stomach pushes up. This can cause heartburn.
Sometimes, a hernia can be dangerous. This is called strangulation. This happens when the blood supply to an organ is blocked. This causes very bad pain. Doctors can use surgery to fix a hernia. They may use a small camera to help. This is called laparoscopic surgery.
A hernia is a medical condition where tissue or an organ pushes through a weak spot.
This happens because of changes in pressure inside the body. When pressure builds up, the muscles push back to hold everything steady. If the pressure gets too high, it can force tissue through a weak area. This can be caused by things like heavy lifting, coughing, or obesity. Some people are even born with these weak spots. Once a hernia starts, it often keeps getting larger. This is because the tension on the wall increases at the site of the hole.
People have known about hernias for a very long time. The first known description of a hernia is found in the Ebers Papyrus. This is an ancient Egyptian document from at least 1550 BC. Today, doctors use many tools to find them. They might use an ultrasound or a special scan called a CT scan.
There are many different types of hernias found in the body. Inguinal hernias are the most common and happen in the groin area.

While some hernias are not emergencies, others need fast help. A serious problem is called strangulation. This is when the blood supply to an organ is blocked.

A hernia is the abnormal exit of tissue or an organ through a wall of a body cavity.
Most hernias happen because the muscles and tendons in the belly weaken or become damaged.
There are several distinct types of hernias based on where they occur. Inguinal hernias are the most common and happen in the groin area.

Symptoms vary depending on the specific type of hernia. Many people with groin hernias experience pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen. This pain may worsen when coughing, exercising, or during bowel movements. A visible bulge might appear at the site, which often gets larger when bending down. Hiatus hernias, which involve the stomach protruding through the diaphragm, often cause heartburn or chest pain.
Medical professionals use various methods to diagnose these conditions. Doctors can often identify a hernia simply by looking for a bulge or feeling the area. For internal hernias that cannot be seen, medical imaging is the primary tool. Multidetector CT (MDCT) scans can show the exact site of the hernia sac and its contents with great precision.
History shows that humans have studied hernias for millennia. The earliest known description of a hernia is found in the Ebers Papyrus from Egypt, dating back to at least 1550 BC. Today, the scale of the issue is significant. In 2019, there were 32.53 million prevalent cases of inguinal, femoral, and abdominal hernias globally. This represents a 36% increase in prevalent cases since 1990. Furthermore, groin hernias affect about 27% of males and 3% of females during their lifetimes.
If left untreated, a hernia can lead to dangerous complications. The most serious is bowel strangulation, where the blood supply to a part of the bowel is blocked. This is a medical emergency that requires immediate surgery.
