This was largely because his wife was Jewish. Although he initially declined a position at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, he eventually accepted it. He became an important early member of that institute. He remained in the United States for many years, working in Princeton, New Jersey. He eventually retired and moved back to Zürich, where he died of a heart attack on December 8, 1955.
