To solve this, he created what are called nonsense syllables, or CVC trigrams. These are three-letter combinations consisting of a consonant, a vowel, and another consonant. He ensured the consonants did not repeat and the syllables had no meaning. He created a collection of 2,300 such syllables, such as "DAX" or "BOK." He avoided syllables like "BOL" because they sounded too much like real words.

Ebbinghaus's experimental method was incredibly disciplined. He was the only subject in his own studies, which helped him control for many variables. He would pull random syllables from a box and write them in a notebook. To ensure consistency, he used a metronome to maintain a steady beat. He read the syllables aloud with the same voice inflection every time. One single investigation required him to perform 15,000 recitations. He used these methods to track how many repetitions were needed to memorize different amounts of information.

Through these tests, Ebbinghaus discovered several fundamental principles of memory. His most famous finding is the forgetting curve. This curve describes the exponential loss of information after learning. The most significant decay happens very quickly. The sharpest decline occurs within the first twenty minutes of learning. Significant decay continues through the first hour, but the curve eventually levels off after about one day.

He also identified the serial position effect. This effect describes how the position of an item in a list changes how well it is recalled. It consists of two parts: primacy and recency. The primacy effect occurs when a person remembers the first items in a list well due to increased rehearsal. The recency effect occurs when the most recent information is remembered because it is still in short-term memory. Additionally, he discovered the concept of savings. Savings refers to the amount of information retained in the subconscious even when it cannot be consciously accessed. He found that when people relearn a list, they do it much faster than the first time.

Ebbinghaus's life was marked by significant academic shifts. Born on January 24, 1850, in Barmen, Prussia, he was the son of a wealthy merchant. He initially studied history and philology at the University of Bonn. His path changed when he developed an interest in philosophy. His studies were briefly interrupted in 1870 when he served in the Prussian Army during the Franco-Prussian War. He earned his doctorate in 1873. After working as a tutor in England and France, he moved to Berlin. There, he founded the third psychological testing lab in Germany.

His professional career included several important roles and publications. In 1885, he published his monumental work, "Memory: A Contribution to Experimental Psychology." This publication likely led to his appointment as a professor at the University of Berlin. In 1890, he co-founded the journal "Zeitschrift für Physiologie und Psychologie der Sinnesorgane." Later, he moved to the University of Breslau, where he worked on a commission studying children's mental abilities. This work helped lay the groundwork for future intelligence testing. He later published "Fundamentals of Psychology" in 1902 and "Outline of Psychology" in 1908.

Ebbinghaus's impact on science was immediate and lasting. His work spurred massive amounts of memory research in the United States during the 1890s. The psychologist William James called his studies "heroic" and described them as the most brilliant investigation in the history of psychology. While some critics noted that using only himself as a subject limited how his results applied to everyone, his internal findings were very sound. His research provided a foundation for understanding how humans learn and retain information. He died of pneumonia on February 26, 1909, at the age of 59.
