How did the cards work? Each card held info about one person. A hole in a specific spot meant one thing. No hole in that spot meant something else. The significance of his work was proven during the 1890 United States Census. Before his invention, the 1880 census had taken eight years to process. This was a massive achievement because the population was growing and the amount of data was increasing. His machines were not just used in America; they were leased or purchased by census bureaus worldwide. Countries including England, Wales, Italy, Germany, Russia, Austria, Canada, France, Norway, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines all used his equipment. This global adoption showed how essential his technology had become to modern governance.

Today, we can still see the influence of Hollerith's ideas in how we handle data. His punched cards were used for computer input and output for almost one hundred years. Even the term "Hollerith datum" is used to describe a string of characters in certain processing contexts. His life ended in 1929 when he died of a heart attack in Washington, D.C., at age 69. He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in the Georgetown neighborhood. His descendants have continued to serve in prominent roles, including members of the clergy. Hollerith remains a seminal figure because he bridged the gap between manual record-keeping and the digital era.
