Throughout his career, he composed more than 100 songs. He also wrote famous operas and music for many stage plays.

Purcell was born in Westminster in 1659. Music was a central part of his family life. His father, Henry Purcell Senior, was a gentleman of the Chapel Royal. This meant he sang for the coronation of King Charles II. After his father died in 1664, his uncle Thomas became his guardian. Thomas arranged for Henry to become a chorister. He studied under several important masters. These included Captain Henry Cooke and Pelham Humfrey. Humfrey had been a pupil of the famous French composer Lully. Later, Purcell continued his musical education under John Blow.

Purcell's musical training involved many different roles. He was a chorister in the Chapel Royal for many years. In 1673, his voice broke, which is a natural change in a young singer. He then worked as an assistant to an organ-builder named John Hingston. In 1676, he was appointed as a copyist at Westminster Abbey. He is said to have been composing music as early as age nine. His first certain composition was an ode for the King's birthday in 1670. By 1679, he had become the organist of Westminster Abbey. He also held the position of organist at the Chapel Royal.

Purcell wrote many different types of music. He composed sacred music for the church and odes for the royal family. One notable example is his work for the Rev. John Gostling. Gostling had an extraordinary basso profondo voice. This voice had a range of at least two full octaves. Purcell wrote anthems specifically to use this wide range. One such anthem is titled "They that go down to the sea in ships." This piece was written because King Charles II escaped a shipwreck. Purcell also wrote music for the coronation of King James II in 1685. He even composed birthday odes for Queen Mary.

His work for the theatre was also very important. Between 1680 and 1688, he wrote music for seven different plays. His chamber opera, *Dido and Aeneas*, is a major landmark in English dramatic music. This work is sometimes called the first genuine English opera. In this opera, the music carries the entire drama. It was based on the story from Virgil's epic, the *Aeneid*. Purcell also wrote many "semi-operas," which were also called dramatic operas. In these works, the main characters speak their lines in dialogue. Singers perform songs "for" the characters instead of singing the whole story.

Purcell's output for the stage was vast. He wrote music for many adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. One example is *The Fairy Queen*, an adaptation of *A Midsummer Night's Dream*. This was his longest score for the theatre. He also wrote music for *King Arthur* in 1691. In his final six years, Purcell wrote music for forty-two plays. This includes works like *The Indian Queen* and *The Tempest*. His music for the stage helped bridge the gap between spoken plays and musical drama. This helped shape how English theatre used music for many years.

Purcell died on 21 November 1695. He was at the height of his career. He was likely 35 or 36 years old. The exact cause of his death remains unclear. Some believe he died of tuberculosis. Others suggest he caught a chill after being locked out of his home. He was buried in the north aisle of Westminster Abbey. He was mourned as a "very great master of music."

His legacy was preserved by his family. His wife, Frances, helped keep his music alive for future generations. She published his works in two volumes called *Orpheus Britannicus*. These volumes were printed in 1698 and 1702. His son, Edward, also became a musician. Edward was appointed as an organist in 1711. Through the work of his family and the continued performance of his music, Purcell's influence remains. His compositions continue to be studied and performed by musicians today.
