Clay’s early life began in Hanover County, Virginia. He was born on April 12, 1777, to John and Elizabeth Clay.
In 1797, Clay moved to Lexington, Kentucky, to start his legal career. He became known for his skill in courtroom oratory, which is the art of public speaking. He taught at Transylvania University, which was the first university west of the Appalachian Mountains. Clay also entered politics as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party. He was elected to the Kentucky state legislature in 1803. Later, in 1810, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1811, he became the Speaker of the House. During this time, he helped lead the United States into the War of 1812. He later helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent to end that war.
As a leader, Clay developed a specific economic plan called the American System. This plan aimed to strengthen the young nation through three main parts. First, it called for federal investments in infrastructure, such as roads and canals. 
Clay was a master of political negotiation during many national crises. In 1820, he helped pass the Missouri Compromise. This was a major agreement regarding the expansion of slavery into new territories. In 1824, Clay played a role in the election of John Quincy Adams. He used his power as Speaker to help Adams win a contingent election.
Despite his many successes, Clay never became president. He ran for the office in 1824, 1832, and 1844.
Clay’s personal life was also filled with significant events. He married Lucretia Hart in 1799.
