Other headaches are called secondary headaches. These come from another problem. A head injury or an infection can cause them. Some can be very serious.

How does it happen? The brain itself does not feel pain. It has no pain receptors. But other parts do. These include your muscles and blood vessels. When these parts are irritated, they send a message. They use a nociceptor, which is a special nerve cell. This cell tells your brain that you are in pain.

Secondary headaches work differently because they are caused by another problem. These can be caused by infections, head injuries, or even brain tumors. Some secondary headaches can be very dangerous. Doctors look for "red flags," or warning signs, to see if a headache is serious. For example, a headache caused by meningitis might include a fever or a stiff neck. Other causes include issues with the eyes, like acute closed-angle glaucoma. This can cause eye pain and blurry vision.

To understand how it works, we must look at how the body feels pain. The brain itself does not have pain receptors, so the brain cannot feel pain. However, many other parts of the head do have these receptors. These include the muscles, the eyes, the teeth, and the blood vessels.
