Because the Spanish team was the first to report it to the Minor Planet Center, they received the credit for the discovery. The name Haumea was later chosen by the Caltech team to honor Hawaiian mythology.

One of the most striking features of Haumea is its unusual shape. Instead of being a sphere, it is shaped like a Jacobi ellipsoid. This means it is a stretched, elongated shape where the major axis is twice as long as the minor axis.

There was some controversy regarding whether the Spanish team had accessed the Caltech observation logs. However, the International Astronomical Union eventually named the body Haumea.

The name Haumea comes from the Hawaiian goddess of childbirth and fertility.

This name was chosen to honor the location where the satellites were discovered. The moons were also given Hawaiian names, Hiʻiaka and Nāmaka, after the daughters of the goddess. This naming convention pays homage to the Gemini and W. M. Keck Observatories on Mauna Kea. The planetary symbol for Haumea was designed by Denis Moskowitz. It combines petroglyphs representing a woman and childbirth.

Haumea follows a complex path through space. It has an orbital period of 284 Earth years. Its orbit is also influenced by its relationship with Neptune. Haumea is thought to be in an intermittent 7:12 orbital resonance with Neptune. This means the resonance is not stable and breaks twice every 4.6 million years.

Because of these gravitational interactions, Haumea's future orbit may be unstable. Some studies suggest it could eventually be ejected from its current orbit into deep space.
