His job was to lead soldiers and protect Carthaginian lands. He commanded many different types of troops. These included infantry, which are soldiers who walk, and cavalry, which are soldiers on horses. He even led war elephants. In 218 BC, Hannibal left a large force in Iberia. This force had 13,000 infantry and 2,550 cavalry. Hasdrubal was chosen to lead these men. He wanted to help his brother by marching to Italy.

Hasdrubal Barca was a prominent Carthaginian general during the Second Punic War. He was a member of the powerful Barcid family. This family included his father, Hamilcar Barca, and his brothers, Hannibal and Mago. Hasdrubal played a vital role in defending Carthaginian interests in Iberia, which is part of modern-day Spain. His primary mission was to manage troops and territory to support his brother Hannibal's campaign in Italy.

Hasdrubal's military responsibilities involved commanding diverse groups of soldiers. In 218 BC, Hannibal left a large force in Iberia before marching to Italy. This force consisted of 13,000 infantry and 2,550 cavalry, along with 21 war elephants. Hasdrubal took command of these troops. He was also tasked with managing the Carthaginian navy in the region. The fleet initially included 50 quinqueremes, which are large warships with five rows of oars, and three triremes. However, only 32 quinqueremes were actually manned at the start of the war.

His leadership was tested by many different challenges and stages of conflict. First, he had to deal with Roman expeditions led by Gnaeus and Publius Cornelius Scipio. In 217 BC, Hasdrubal led a joint land and sea expedition north to fight the Romans. He commanded the army while his deputy, Himilco, led the fleet. They encamped at the mouth of the Ebro River. During this stage, the Romans surprised the Carthaginian fleet at the Battle of the Ebro River. This loss forced Hasdrubal to retreat to Cartagena to protect Carthaginian territory.

Another difficult stage involved managing local uprisings. After the naval defeat, the dismissal of Iberian crews caused the Turdetani tribe to rebel. Hasdrubal spent much of 216 BC subduing these rebels near Gades. While the Carthaginian Senate ordered him to march to Italy to reinforce Hannibal, Hasdrubal delayed. He argued that the Iberian tribes were too unstable and Roman forces were too strong. He eventually received 4,000 infantry and 500 cavalry to strengthen his position before moving toward the Ebro.

Hasdrubal also experienced significant military victories and defeats in large-scale battles. In 215 BC, he fought at the Battle of Ibera. He used his cavalry superiority to try to envelop the Roman enemy. However, the Romans broke through his center and defeated his wings, causing heavy losses. Later, in 212 BC, Hasdrubal achieved a major success at the Battle of the Upper Baetis. He routed his opponents and killed both Scipio brothers. This victory allowed the Carthaginians to control territory up to the Ebro River.

In the later years of the war, Hasdrubal's movements became even more critical. In 208 BC, he was summoned to join Hannibal in Italy. He escaped Roman pursuit by crossing the Pyrenees mountains in the winter. In 207 BC, he successfully crossed the Alps. He moved faster than Hannibal had a decade earlier. This was partly because of paths left by Hannibal's previous army. He also brought war elephants trained in Iberia. He hoped to meet Hannibal in South Umbria to create a massive force.

The final and most decisive moment occurred at the Battle of the Metaurus in 207 BC. Hasdrubal's messengers were captured, and he was intercepted by two Roman armies. He was decisively defeated in the battle and died during the fighting. This event had massive historical significance. Historians like Edward Creasy and Paul K. Davis note that this defeat ended the attempt to reinforce Hannibal. Without Hasdrubal's army, Hannibal was left stranded in Italy. This allowed Rome to establish dominance over Spain and eventually become a global power.
