The connection between Harpagus and Cyrus began with a prophecy. King Astyages, the last king of Media, had a dream about his daughter, Mandane. The dream suggested her child would grow up to overthrow him. To prevent this, Astyages ordered Harpagus to expose the infant at birth. Harpagus was reluctant to harm royal blood. Instead, he gave the baby, Cyrus, to a shepherd named Mitradates. The shepherd raised Cyrus as his own son.

Years later, the truth about Cyrus was discovered. King Astyages punished Harpagus with a very cruel and unfair act. He killed Harpagus's only son and served him to Harpagus during a banquet. This event is often compared to the myth of Thyestes. Harpagus did not react outwardly during the meal. He simply gathered the pieces of his son to bury them. This trauma caused Harpagus to seek revenge against the Median king.

Harpagus bided his time while Cyrus grew into a powerful leader. He sent gifts to Cyrus to maintain contact. He also worked to turn the Median nobles against Astyages. When the time was right, Harpagus sent a secret message to Cyrus. The message was hidden inside the belly of a hare. It warned Cyrus that the Median army would mutiny during battle. This plan worked during the Battle of Pasargadae. Harpagus changed his allegiance to Cyrus on the battlefield. This defection led to the defeat of Astyages and the formation of the Persian Empire.

After the fall of the Median kingdom in 550 BC, Harpagus continued his military career. He served Cyrus II, also known as Cyrus the Great. Harpagus was a very successful and clever general. During a war against the Lydians, he suggested a specific tactic. He placed riders on camels to face the Lydian cavalry. The horses panicked because of the smell of the dromedary camels. This clever device helped Cyrus defeat the Lydian forces.

Harpagus was also known for his innovations in engineering and siege warfare. He used earthwork ramps and mounds to reach enemy fortifications. This method was so effective that Alexander the Great used it much later. He also used mountain climbers to scale the walls of his opponents. Following the death of General Mazares, Cyrus gave Harpagus command over Asia Minor. He conquered many regions, including Ionia, Phoenicia, Caria, and Lycia. He was a very successful leader in these vast territories.

Because of his many victories, Harpagus was appointed as the Satrap of Asia Minor. A Satrap is a high-ranking official who governs a large province. His influence lasted long after his military service ended. His descendants eventually became the royal family of Lycia. This region is located in what is now southwest Turkey. The life of Harpagus shows how personal grievances can influence the rise of entire empires.
