Harald fought in many different campaigns there. Later, around 1034, Harald moved south to Constantinople. This was the capital of the Byzantine Empire.
In 1042, Harald left the Byzantine Empire to go home. He wanted to reclaim his family's throne in Norway. By then, Magnus the Good was ruling Norway. In 1046, Harald joined forces with a man named Sweyn II. They raided the coast of Denmark together. Magnus did not want to fight his own uncle. Instead, Magnus agreed to share the kingship with Harald. Harald even shared his wealth with Magnus. When Magnus died the next year, Harald became the sole king.
Harald spent many years trying to gain more power. He wanted to control Denmark and the North Sea. He raided the Danish coast almost every year until 1064. He fought against his former ally, Sweyn, many times. Even though he was successful in raids, he did not conquer Denmark. Later, a man named Tostig Godwinson asked for Harald's help. Tostig wanted Harald to claim the English throne. Harald agreed to the plan in 1066.
Harald's success in England did not last long. On September 25, 1066, he fought another battle. This was the Battle of Stamford Bridge. The English king, Harold Godwinson, launched a surprise attack. Harald's army was defeated, and Harald was killed.
