Haitian Vodou is a religion from Haiti.

Vodou teaches about one supreme God. This God is called Bondye. Bondye is the creator of the universe. Bondye is very far away from humans. Because of this, people talk to spirits instead. These spirits are called lwa. There are over a thousand lwa.
People meet in temples to practice. A priest or priestess leads the way. They use drumming, singing, and dancing. These acts help people connect with the lwa. They also use herbs to help heal people.

Haitian Vodou is a complex Afro-Haitian religion.
Vodou has no single central authority. There is no central leader or formal body of doctrine. Because of this, there is no single orthodoxy or formal creed.
The theology of Vodou can be described as both monotheistic and polytheistic. Practitioners believe in one supreme creator named Bondye. The name comes from the French words for "Good God." Bondye is the ultimate source of all power. This divinity maintains the cosmic order of the universe. However, Bondye is considered transcendent and remote. This means the creator is uninvolved in human affairs.
Each lwa has a unique personality and set of attributes. They are associated with specific colors, days of the week, and objects.
Rituals are central to the practice of Vodou.
Vodou played a major role in the history of Haiti. Many Vodouists participated in the Haitian Revolution from 1791 to 1801. This revolution overthrew the French colonial government in Saint-Domingue. It also abolished slavery and created the republic of Haiti.
Despite its importance, Vodou has faced much criticism. It is often described as one of the world's most misunderstood religions. Some practitioners have even sought to remove Catholic influences. This was influenced by the Négritude movement. However, many people see no contradiction in following both systems. Vodou continues to evolve and change over time. It remains a vital part of the identity of the Haitian diaspora.
