Hafez al-Assad was a Syrian politician and military officer who ruled Syria for nearly three decades.

Hafezalassad.jpg
Hafezalassad.jpg
He served as the president of Syria from 1971 until his death in June 2000. Before becoming president, he held several important roles. He served as the prime minister from 1970 to 1971. He was also a top leader in the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party. This party held power in Syria from 1963 until the regime fell in 2024. Assad's leadership changed how Syria interacted with the rest of the world. He moved the country away from certain radical policies toward more stable foreign relations.

Assad rose to power through a series of military coups. A coup is when the military takes control of a government. In 1963, he helped a coup that brought the Ba'ath Party to power. Following this, he was appointed commander of the Syrian Arab Air Force. In February 1966, he participated in a second coup. This event removed the traditional leaders of the Ba'ath Party. After this, the new government appointed him as the defense minister. In 1970, he initiated a third coup. This move ousted the Marxist leader Salah Jadid. This final action allowed Assad to become the leader of Syria.

Assad's early life was marked by poverty and hard work. He was born on October 6, 1930, in the town of Qardaha. He grew up in a poor Alawite peasant family. His father was Ali al-Assad, and his mother was Na'isa Shalish. Assad was the ninth son in a large family. He recalled his childhood involved many phases of farming. He often thought about the injustices he saw during those years. These early experiences shaped how he viewed the world later in life.

Because his family could not afford medical school, Assad joined the military. He entered the Homs Military Academy in 1950. He wanted to become a pilot and attended flying school in Aleppo. He was a talented aviator and won a best-aviator trophy. In 1957, he traveled to the Soviet Union for training. There, he learned to fly MiG-17 fighter jets. During this time, he also married Anisa Makhlouf. His military career provided the foundation for his political rise.

As president, Assad focused on strengthening Syria's place in the world. He formed a strong alliance with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. This partnership provided support against Israel. However, he also maintained ties with Western European and Gulf Arabian countries. During the 1973 October War, he received economic support from OPEC members. This support came during the 1973 oil embargo. Assad also promoted the idea of pan-Arabism. This is the concept of unifying the Arab world into one nation. He worked to present Syria as a defender of the Palestinians.

Assad's rule was characterized by strict control and significant conflict. He reduced the power of party decision-making to favor the president's absolute authority. To maintain this control, a cult of personality was created around him. This meant the state promoted his image and his family constantly. His government faced many accusations of human rights violations. He also ordered an Arabization campaign in Kurdish areas. In 1976, he began an intervention in Lebanon that led to a Syrian occupation. His regime also crushed an uprising by the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. This conflict included the Hama massacre, which destroyed two-thirds of the city of Hama.

The question of who would follow Assad was a major political issue. Initially, he wanted his brother Rifaat to succeed him. However, Rifaat tried to seize power in 1983 and 1984. This occurred when Hafez had a health scare, and Rifaat was later exiled. Assad's next choice was his eldest son, Bassel. Tragically, Bassel died in a high-speed car crash in 1994. Assad then chose his third son, Bashar. At the time, Bashar was a medical student in the United Kingdom. Although some officials criticized this choice, Assad moved forward with the plan. When Hafez died on June 10, 2000, Bashar became the president of Syria.
