Howard Phillips Lovecraft was a prolific American author of weird fiction, horror, fantasy, and science fiction. He is best known for developing a philosophy called cosmicism. This concept suggests that humanity is an insignificant part of a vast, indifferent cosmos. Lovecraft viewed the universe as a cold place without inherent purpose for mankind. This perspective served as the creative foundation for his reinvention of the horror genre. His stories often explored the fragility of anthropocentrism, which is the belief that humans are the central or most important entities in the universe.

Lovecraft’s literary style relied on specific thematic mechanisms to create dread. He frequently combined elements of science fiction and fantasy to illustrate his cosmicist views. His narratives often focused on the concept of civilizational decline. He believed the West was in a state of decline during his own lifetime. Many of his stories were set in a fictionalized version of New England. He used these settings to ground his supernatural themes in a recognizable reality. This approach allowed him to explore how ancient, unknown forces might interact with the modern world.

His writing is often categorized by its connection to the Cthulhu Mythos. This is not a single book, but a collection of characters, settings, and themes. These elements were inspired by his own original works. Other authors began to use his ideas to create their own stories, forming a shared universe. Some of his most significant contributions include "The Call of Cthulhu," "At the Mountains of Madness," "The Shadow over Innsmouth," and "The Shadow Out of Time."

Lovecraft’s personal life was marked by significant family tragedies and financial instability. He was born on August 20, 1890, in Providence, Rhode Island.

His father, Winfield Scott Lovecraft, was institutionalized at Butler Hospital in 1893 following a psychotic episode. Winfield died in 1898 from general paresis, a term for late-stage syphilis.

Following this, Lovecraft was raised largely by his mother, Susie, and his maternal grandfather, Whipple Van Buren Phillips. Whipple was a central figure who encouraged Lovecraft’s love for classical literature and poetry. He even told original weird tales of "winged horrors" to entertain his grandson.

Despite his early affluent upbringing, the family's wealth slowly dissipated. Whipple’s business ventures suffered a major downturn, leading to the loss of household servants. In 1904, a catastrophic business failure occurred, and Whipple died of a stroke at age 70. This left Lovecraft and his mother in a much more difficult financial position. Lovecraft struggled with various health issues throughout his youth, including intense headaches and insomnia. He also experienced a severe health crisis in 1908, which he described as a "nervous collapse." Some researchers suggest he may have suffered from chorea minor, a condition involving involuntary movements.

Lovecraft’s professional career saw him move through different literary circles. He began writing essays for the United Amateur Press Association and eventually entered the world of pulp fiction. In 1924, he married Sonia Greene and moved to New York City. In New York, he became part of the "Lovecraft Circle," a group of interconnected authors. This group helped introduce him to "Weird Tales," his most prominent publisher. However, his time in the city was difficult for his mental health and finances. He eventually returned to Providence in 1926, where he wrote for another 11 years.

While Lovecraft is now a major figure in literature, he was almost unknown during his lifetime. He lived primarily on the earnings from pulp magazines and was never able to support himself fully. It was not until a scholarly revival in the 1970s that his significance was widely recognized. Today, he is considered one of the most important 20th-century authors of supernatural horror. His legacy remains through countless direct adaptations and spiritual successors in film and literature.
