Guy of Lusignan was a Frankish knight from Poitou. He served as the King of Jerusalem during a very turbulent era.
Guy was the youngest son of Hugh VIII of Lusignan. His family had deep roots in the Crusades. His great-grandfather, Hugh VI, fought at the Battle of Ramla in 1102. His grandfather and his maternal uncle also participated in the Second Crusade. Guy himself was banished from Poitou after a violent incident. In March 1168, he and his brothers killed Patrick, the 1st Earl of Salisbury. They had attempted to kidnap Eleanor of Aquitaine during this event. Guy arrived in the Holy Land sometime between 1173 and 1180.
Political maneuvering led to Guy's marriage to Sibylla in 1180. At that time, powerful men like Raymond III of Tripoli were planning a coup. They wanted to replace the royal family with their own chosen nobles. To prevent this, King Baldwin IV married his sister Sibylla to Guy very quickly. The wedding was hurried and lacked public notice. This marriage split the nobility into two rival factions. One group supported Sibylla's maternal relatives, while the other opposed Guy.

Saladin eventually released him, allowing Guy to reunite with his wife.
Guy's later years were marked by the Third Crusade and internal disputes. He led a siege at Acre starting in 1189. During this siege, an epidemic caused the deaths of his wife and children. A man named Conrad of Montferrat emerged as a rival for the throne. This created a bitter conflict between Guy and Conrad. Although King Richard I of England supported Guy, the nobility elected Conrad as king in 1192.
To resolve the conflict, Richard I provided Guy with a new territory. Guy was given the lordship of Cyprus to compensate for losing the Jerusalem crown.
