Making music was a big part of Holst's life and family history.
Holst studied hard to become a great composer. He went to the Royal College of Music in London in 1893. At first, he did not have a scholarship and had to be very careful with his money. He even became a vegetarian to save costs while studying. He studied many different things like piano, organ, and trombone. His main teacher for composing was Charles Villiers Stanford. Holst learned to be very critical of his own work to make it better.
While studying, Holst met many people who changed his music.

Music was deeply embedded in Holst's family history for generations.
To support his musical studies, Holst worked as a professional trombonist.
Holst's education at the Royal College of Music was very rigorous. He studied piano, organ, and instrumentation under several different professors. Eventually, he achieved his goal of studying composition with Charles Villiers Stanford. Stanford taught his students to be highly self-critical of their work. This discipline helped Holst refine his technical skills. During this time, Holst also encountered the music of Richard Wagner. Although he initially struggled with Wagner's complex style, he eventually became an ardent admirer. This influence left traces of Wagnerian elements in his early songs and overtures.
During his student years, Holst formed a vital connection with Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Holst was a dedicated educator who believed in the power of music education. He served as the musical director at Morley College from 1907 until 1924. He also pioneered music education for women at St Paul's Girls' School. He taught there from 1905 until his death in 1934. Additionally, he founded a series of Whitsun music festivals in 1916. These festivals continued for the rest of his life. His teaching was highly regarded by his colleagues. His friend Vaughan Williams described him as a great teacher.
In his later years, Holst's popularity faced some challenges. Some listeners found his uncompromising style to be too austere. This meant his music could feel very plain or severe to some. Consequently, his popularity declined for a period. However, he remained a significant influence on younger English composers. These included musicians such as Edmund Rubbra, Michael Tippett, and Benjamin Britten. While much of his work was neglected for decades, interest returned in the 1980s. This revival happened because many of his recordings became widely available.
