His fame grew during the An Lushan Rebellion, which began in 755. At the start, Guo Ziyi was assigned to protect Tong Pass. This was a strategic location on the Chinese frontier. A rebel force of ten thousand men marched toward the pass. Guo Ziyi used a clever tactic to defend the area. He lured the rebels onto open plains with very few settlements. The rebels found nothing to loot and became discouraged. Guo then engaged seven thousand troops at the Battle of Qingbi. He won his first victory while suffering very few casualties.

As the rebellion continued, the situation became much more dangerous. The capital city of Chang'an fell due to corruption and poor strategy. The Emperor Xuanzong was forced to flee to Chengdu. During this time, Guo Ziyi faced a massive force of one hundred thousand rebels. This force was led by the commander Shi Siming. Although Guo had only ten thousand men, he did not retreat. He used a trick to make the rebels fear an ambush. This delayed the enemy for forty days. Eventually, commander Li Guangbi arrived with ninety thousand men to help. The resulting battle caused ten thousand rebel casualties but very few Tang losses.

Guo Ziyi's successes helped lead to the recapture of the capital. After the rebellion, the Tang Empire faced new threats from the Tibetan Empire. The Tibetans had supported the rebels during the previous conflict. In 763, a Tibetan force of 100,000 invaded the Tang territory. Emperor Daizong was forced to flee the city of Chang'an. Guo Ziyi used a brilliant psychological tactic to stop the invasion. He sent cavalry scouts to light fires in many different places. He also ordered citizens to strike gongs in the city. The Tibetans saw the fires and heard the noise. They believed a massive army was attacking and panicked. They retreated without a major battle occurring.

This victory is a famous historical example of a "clean" battle. It follows the ideas of the strategist Sun Tzu. A clean battle achieves a victory without causing massive loss of life. There are different accounts of how many scouts Guo Ziyi used. Some Chinese sources say he sent only 13 scouts. Other Tibetan texts suggest there were 200 scouts. Regardless of the exact number, the strategy worked perfectly. The Tibetan army fled, and the invasion ended peacefully. Emperor Daizong expressed his regret that the general had not been used sooner. This event helped stabilize the Tang Dynasty during a period of great weakness.

Guo Ziyi's life was marked by both great triumph and political struggle. He often dealt with emperors who feared his growing popularity. Emperor Suzong once demoted him because he was so well-liked by the people. Later, a general named Wang Yuanzhi murdered a commander to demand Guo's reinstatement. Guo Ziyi responded by condemning the murder to protect the chain of command. He prioritized the stability of the empire over his own personal power. His ability to navigate both war and politics made him a unique figure. He remains a symbol of both military skill and political wisdom in Chinese history.
