Gunsan has a very long history. It started as a small fishing village by the river. In the late 19th century, it became an important port. This happened because people needed to ship rice to Japan. In 1899, the Gunsan Port officially opened for international trade. During the period of Japanese rule, the city was called Gunzan. After 1945, the city began to grow slowly again. The Korean War in the 1950s did not damage the city much. A group of Marines fought hard in the hills to protect the port.

The city's economy relies on several interconnected systems. Heavy industry thrives in the Industrial Zone, which was created by reclaiming land from the sea. This zone hosts large-scale manufacturing plants. For example, a GM Korea factory assembled Chevrolet Aveo vehicles for global markets until 2018. Another major facility is the Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle factory. This factory produces Daewoo trucks for both domestic and export markets. The city also functions as a vital commercial center for rice. The fertile Honam plain provides large harvests of rice. The port facilitates the massive shipment of this rice through the Geum basin.

History has shaped the modern landscape of Gunsan. Originally, it was a small fishing village near the Geum River. In the late 19th century, it transformed into a major port. This change occurred because of pressure to ship rice to Japan. The Gunsan Port officially opened for international trade in 1899. During the Japanese occupation, the city was known as Gunzan. After liberation in 1945, the city experienced slow growth. During the Korean War in the 1950s, the area remained relatively unscathed. This was because UN and South Korean forces moved south so quickly. However, a battalion of ROK Marines fought in the hills above the port. Their engagement provided time for the town to be evacuated.

Military presence has also influenced the city's development. Kunsan Air Base is operated by the United States Air Force. Construction of the base began around 1923 under Japanese direction. Workers reclaimed mudflats to build the facility. The base has hosted various USAF combat aircraft.

The proximity of US service members once drove local economic growth. This was most visible in the downtown shopping districts. Recently, these areas have changed to serve Korean shoppers instead. However, a small area called America Town still caters to US troops. It features bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops near the base gate.

Nature and tourism provide important cultural experiences in Gunsan. The city is home to the Gunsan Islands. This group consists of 16 inhabited islands and 47 uninhabited islands. Seonyudo Island is a central part of this group. Visitors can reach it via passenger ships that run 6 to 8 times daily.

Another major site is Eunpa, which means "Silver Wave." This area was originally an agricultural reservoir. It is now a National Tourist Place featuring a 370-meter-long Mulbit Bridge. In the spring, a 1-km tunnel of cherry blossoms forms at the entrance. The park also features a music fountain that runs eight times per day.

Environmental features make the region a destination for scientists and birdwatchers. The mouth of the Geum River contains large reed forests. This area is the largest migrant bird colony in South Korea. Between mid-October and March, approximately 500,000 winter migrant birds visit. These include 40 different types, such as Baikal teals and mallards. A 360-degree observatory allows for close-up views of these species. The Bird Watching Gallery is considered the best vantage point in the country for this activity.

Cultural landmarks offer a look into the city's diverse past. Wolmyeong Park is located in the center of the city. It offers views of both the Geumgang River and the West Sea. For architectural history, visitors can see the Sinheung-Dong district. This area contains traditional Japanese-style houses built during the colonial era.

Additionally, Dongguksa is a unique religious site. It is the only remaining temple in Korea built in the Japanese style. The temple is characterized by plain eaves and many windows. Finally, the Saemangeum Seawall sits just south of the city. It is recognized as the longest dyke in the world.
